UPDATE: Dick Van Dyke, the beloved entertainer, has revealed he “neglected” his family in pursuit of his successful career as he approaches his 100th birthday on December 13, 2023. In a candid interview with People, the iconic star reflected on the sacrifices he made while building his legacy in film, television, and live theater.
The 99-year-old actor admitted, “[My family] probably got neglected at some point because I was really working hard to get out of poverty.” Van Dyke, known for classics like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, openly discussed the challenges of balancing his demanding career with family life, particularly in the early stages of his professional journey.
“I was [raising] a family with no money,” Van Dyke explained. “The whole thing was getting some money together and getting a home.” He shared that the pressure to succeed led him to take on numerous jobs, including game shows and nightclub performances, often sacrificing his sleep. “At one point, I was doing a disc jockey show at 5 in the morning, and then at night I was working with a partner in nightclubs,” he recalled, admitting he often survived on just three or four hours of sleep.
Despite the sacrifices, Van Dyke noted that his hard work eventually paid off, stating, “Once I did, I enjoyed every minute of it.” He expressed gratitude for his four children—sons Christian, 75, and Barry, 74, and daughters Stacy, 70, and Carrie, 64—with his late ex-wife, Margie Willett. He is now happily married to Arlene Silver, 54, since February 2012.
As fans look forward to his milestone birthday, Van Dyke is also celebrating the release of his new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100, now available in stores.
