UPDATE: A tragic hit-and-run incident in Brooklyn has left a cyclist dead, raising urgent concerns over safety for cyclists in the city. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. today near the intersection of Meserole Street and Lorimer Street in the Williamsburg neighborhood.
Authorities report that 32-year-old Alexandra Huggins was cycling westbound on Meserole Street when she was struck by the driver of a blue Tesla, who fled the scene immediately after the collision. Huggins was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
As police continue their search for the driver, no arrests have been made. Local residents and fellow cyclists express deep concern over the growing number of traffic-related fatalities in the area. “Everyone deserves to get home safe in New York City,” said Charlie Baker, spokesperson for the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. He emphasized the need for immediate changes to protect cyclists, advocating for physical barriers to prevent reckless driving.
The latest data from Transportation Alternatives indicates that 156 people have died in traffic crashes across New York City this year, with 14 of those fatalities involving cyclists. Baker criticized the city’s current bike lane policies, stating that the city is mandated to construct 50 miles of protected bike lanes annually, yet Mayor Eric Adams has implemented only a fraction of that requirement.
Local cyclists are feeling the impact of this tragedy. “I’ve been hit by a few cars,” shared cyclist Jojo Santos, reflecting on the dangers faced daily by those on two wheels. Another cyclist, Patrick del Valle, noted, “It’s a stark reminder of the risk we take just being out in the street every day.”
The community is rallying for justice, with many hoping that the driver responsible for Huggins’ death will be apprehended swiftly. “It’s disheartening that people can get away with that in a city like New York, when there are cameras on every square inch,” del Valle stated.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the incident or the driver of the blue Tesla to come forward. The urgent need for enhanced safety measures for cyclists in Brooklyn cannot be overstated, as residents call for immediate action to prevent further tragedies on the streets.
