Culinary Union Hits Back at DeSantis Over Ballot Claims

UPDATE: The Culinary Union has launched a fierce counterattack against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis following his controversial remarks about the union’s voting practices. This escalating clash comes just hours after DeSantis accused the union of engaging in “ballot harvesting” and undermining the integrity of the voting process.

At a press conference earlier today, DeSantis supported former President Donald Trump‘s opposition to mail-in voting, claiming, “If you’re in Las Vegas, everyone knows ballots get mailed out. Do you think the Culinary Union is just going to let you kind of vote your conscience without trying to — no, they’re going to want to see those votes.” His comments sparked immediate backlash from union leaders.

The Culinary Union, which represents 60,000 workers across Las Vegas and Reno, swiftly condemned DeSantis’ claims as “wild accusations.” Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge did not hold back in his criticism, labeling DeSantis a staunch anti-union activist who bullies workers, including cooks and housekeepers. Pappageorge highlighted DeSantis’ history of supporting anti-worker measures, including the Right to Work Act, which allows employees to opt out of union membership, threatening the stability of private sector unions.

In a fiery response, Pappageorge stated, “Maybe if DeSantis and his MAGA buddies focused on the out-of-control cost of eggs, beef, and rent in his own state, instead of locking up dishwashers and landscapers and attacking Culinary Union members, he might have some credibility.” He further urged DeSantis to address pressing issues in Florida before involving himself in Nevada’s labor matters, declaring, “Unless he fixes the troubles in Florida, he should just shut his mouth.”

This confrontation highlights a growing divide over union rights and worker protections, underscoring the national significance of the Culinary Union’s fight against perceived anti-union policies. As tensions mount, many are watching closely to see how both sides will navigate this escalating conflict.

The Culinary Union’s sharp rebuttal showcases not only the emotional weight of worker rights but also the broader implications for labor movements across the United States. With ongoing debates about minimum wage increases and workers’ rights at the forefront of national discussions, the stakes are higher than ever.

Next Steps: Observers will be keenly watching how this dispute unfolds, particularly as it could influence labor relations and political dynamics ahead of upcoming elections. As both parties dig in, the implications for unionized workers in Nevada and beyond remain critical.
