URGENT UPDATE: Members of Congress are demanding answers from Major League Baseball (MLB) amid a shocking betting scandal that has led to the indictments of two Cleveland Guardians pitchers. In a letter sent Friday, November 3, 2023, to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation expressed grave concerns over an emerging “integrity crisis” in American sports.
Federal prosecutors have indicted pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz on charges of rigging pitches across multiple games to benefit gambling associates. This scandal raises serious questions about the integrity of the game, with the committee highlighting that the allegations against Clase and Ortiz are “markedly more serious” than previous betting incidents in baseball.
The committee, led by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, is questioning how the alleged misconduct went unnoticed for two years, despite the league’s oversight. The letter starkly contrasts this case with the swift action taken against former major leaguer Tucupita Marcano, who was banned for life in 2024 for betting on baseball. “How did MLB catch Marcano and ban him for life but failed to notice Clase allegedly rigging pitches for two years?” the letter states.
The senators have set a deadline of December 5, 2023, for MLB to provide detailed documentation regarding its betting policies and any investigations related to betting activities since January 1, 2020. The committee also inquired about how and when MLB first became aware of the activities of Clase and Ortiz.
This urgent inquiry follows a similar letter sent to the NBA in October, demanding transparency regarding its handling of a betting scandal involving Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups. The committee warned that “an isolated incident of game rigging might be dismissed as an aberration, but the emergence of manipulation across multiple leagues suggests a deeper, systemic vulnerability.”
With the integrity of America’s pastime at stake, the committee’s demands highlight the pressing need for MLB to demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding the sport from outside influence and manipulation. As this developing story unfolds, the impact on the league and its players could be significant, raising concerns among fans about the credibility of the game they love.
Stay tuned for updates as MLB responds to Congress’s urgent request for information.
