UPDATE: A shocking incident unfolded during a death row execution in Alabama as inmate John Louis Evans III caught fire due to a malfunction of the electric chair, known as ‘Yellow Mama’. The botched execution occurred at 8:30 PM on July 14, 2023, and left Evans alive for a harrowing 14 minutes before he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported that when the first jolt of 1,900 volts was administered, a strap broke, causing the electrode on Evans’ leg to detach and ignite flames. The horrific scene filled the chamber with the “pungent odor of burning flesh” as smoke billowed from beneath the hood covering his head. Even more alarming, Evans was still alive after the initial surge, prompting a second jolt, which also resulted in flames flickering around his head.
Prison officials described the execution as “barbaric,” while Governor George Wallace declined to intervene, despite urgent pleas from Evans’ lawyer, Russell Canan, who condemned the execution as “cruel and unusual punishment.” Canan characterized it as “torture… in the name of vengeance disguised as justice.”
As the execution continued, Evans’ body convulsed violently, his fists clenched as if frozen in agony. Following a third 30-second surge, he finally ceased breathing, with medics officially declaring him dead at 8:44 PM.
This tragic incident has reignited the fierce debate over the ethics of capital punishment. Critics argue that the botched execution exemplifies the inherent flaws in the use of the electric chair, asserting that it cannot ensure a “quick, clean death.”
Victim’s father, Eddie Nassar, expressed his mixed feelings, stating, “We gotta have laws. We have to follow the laws of God.” He emphasized the need for justice, saying, “If they let him live, he’s going to come back and kill.”
As more details emerge, this incident is likely to fuel discussions about the future of capital punishment in the United States. Authorities are under increasing pressure to review the protocols surrounding executions and consider alternatives that may prevent similar tragedies in the future.
