Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson Faces Contract Standoff, Risks Sit-Out

UPDATE: The contract negotiations between Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals have reached a critical impasse, with Hendrickson indicating he is prepared to sit out the upcoming season if necessary. This urgent development was revealed during an interview with ESPN’s Laura Rutledge on August 28, 2024, as the Bengals faced off against the Washington Commanders in a preseason matchup.

Hendrickson, who had a standout season in 2024 leading the NFL with 17.5 total sacks, believes he deserves a more significant guaranteed portion of his contract than what the Bengals are currently offering. While both parties have agreed on the extension’s length and average salary, the crux of the disagreement lies in the financial assurances.

“I’m a very blessed man, and I trust in God’s plan here,” Hendrickson stated, emphasizing his commitment to the team. He proudly pointed to the Bengals logo on his shirt, reiterating, “This place means a lot to me.” Despite the ongoing negotiations, he remains focused on helping the Bengals’ defense excel.

Hendrickson ended his recent holdout just last month, joining the team for the preseason. However, no trades have materialized despite the team granting him permission to seek potential suitors. Reports indicate the Bengals would require a young defensive player and a 2026 first-round pick in exchange for Hendrickson.

The clock is ticking for both sides as the Bengals are set to kick off their season against the Cleveland Browns on September 7, 2024. This situation could escalate quickly, especially if Hendrickson does not reach an agreement before the regular season begins.

As the Bengals approach the season opener, fans and analysts alike are left wondering whether Hendrickson will be a part of the team or if this standoff will lead to a prolonged absence. The pressure is mounting, and all eyes are on the Bengals as they navigate this critical negotiation.

Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops, and what it may mean for the Bengals’ season ahead.
