URGENT UPDATE: The Bay Area is set to shift from record-setting rainfall and humidity to a scorching heat wave this weekend. Just days after experiencing a rare September storm, temperatures are projected to soar significantly, with meteorologists warning of dry conditions returning by Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, the region will see a dramatic rise in temperatures starting Sunday, September 24, 2023. Meteorologist Dial Hoang stated, “By Sunday, we’re going to see much warmer temperatures than we’ve seen this week, and Monday it’s going to be even hotter.”
Forecasts indicate that temperatures in areas like Concord, Livermore, and Morgan Hill will climb to the low to mid-80s on Sunday and could reach the low to mid-90s by Monday. This marks a stark increase from the highs of only 76 degrees recorded in those cities on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
The humidity levels, which have hovered around 70% throughout the week, made the weather feel hotter than the reported temperatures. Notably, San Jose received 0.41 inches of rain, breaking a daily record, while Half Moon Bay saw 0.11 inches, both figures surpassing previous records set in 2003 and 1978.
“This unusual September storm has brought significant moisture to the region,” Hoang confirmed. However, as we head into the weekend, the forecast indicates that the East Bay and South Bay are not expected to receive any further precipitation, with only light rain anticipated in parts of Marin and Sonoma County.
The underlying cause of this sudden humidity has been attributed to a persistent marine heat wave affecting ocean temperatures from Southern California to the Gulf of Alaska. This phenomenon, which began in May, is influencing the weather patterns across the region.
As the Bay Area braces for this heat wave, residents are advised to prepare for a significant drop in humidity and an increase in temperatures. The dry warm-up is expected to last at least until Wednesday of next week, marking a stark contrast to the sticky weather of the past several days.
Stay tuned for updates as this developing situation unfolds. The shift in weather patterns could impact outdoor activities and health, especially for vulnerable populations. Share this information widely to keep friends and family informed about the changing conditions!
