Athletics Designate Gio Urshela for Assignment Amid Roster Shakeup

UPDATE: The Oakland Athletics have officially designated third baseman Gio Urshela for assignment as they reshape their roster, a move that just unfolded today. In a swift decision, the A’s also recalled infielder Brett Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas and claimed left-handed pitcher Jared Shuster off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, sending him to Las Vegas.

This urgent roster change comes as the Athletics prepare to face the Los Angeles Angels this weekend in West Sacramento. Urshela, who joined the team on a one-year contract in December, has struggled this season, posting a batting average of just .238 with 20 RBI over 59 games. After a three-week stint on the injured list due to a strained left hamstring, he returned to action on June 17 but managed to play in only 27 of 49 games, hitting .253 in that span.

Urshela, now 33 years old, has had a notable ten-year major league career, previously playing for teams like the Yankees, Cleveland, Toronto, Minnesota, and the Angels. Last season, he recorded a batting average of .250 with nine home runs and 52 RBI while splitting time between Detroit and Atlanta. His defensive skills have earned him a reputation as a reliable player, making his sudden departure from the A’s roster significant.

Meanwhile, Brett Harris is set to make his season debut after struggling last year with a batting average of .146 and three home runs across two stints and 36 games. The decision to bring him back highlights the A’s commitment to infusing new energy into their lineup.

As the Athletics look to turn their season around, fans will be watching closely to see how these changes impact the team’s performance against the Angels. The A’s currently sit at the bottom of the league, making every game crucial for their hopes of climbing back into contention.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
