TCL Unveils PlayCube Projector, Perfect for On-the-Go Viewing

TCL has introduced its latest innovation, the PlayCube projector, which aims to redefine portable viewing experiences for users on the move. Priced at $799.99, this compact device promises to deliver a balance of image quality, sound, and battery life, making it an appealing option for those seeking a versatile projector in 2026.

The PlayCube’s design draws inspiration from the classic Rubik’s Cube, featuring a unique 90-degree rotating mechanism. This allows users to easily adjust the image projection to overcome obstacles, enhancing usability in diverse environments. Weighing 1.3 kg (approximately 2.7 pounds) and measuring 149.8 x 96.6 x 96.6 mm (about 5.90 x 3.80 x 3.80 inches), the projector is small enough to fit in one hand, making it highly portable.

During a two-month road trip, the PlayCube demonstrated its adaptability and ease of use. The projector runs on Google TV, allowing users to stream content effortlessly. Its automatic adjustment features, including focus, keystone correction, obstacle avoidance, and screen detection, enhance the overall user experience.

Performance and Usability

With a brightness of 750 ISO lumens, the PlayCube excels in daytime viewing within confined spaces, such as a van. It can project images up to 100 inches at night, maintaining clarity and vibrancy. While it lacks color-adaptation technology found in competitors like Samsung’s Freestyle+ projector, the PlayCube remains visually appealing for casual viewing.

Audio quality, however, presents a mixed experience. The single 5W speaker delivers adequate sound but lacks depth and richness. High-volume settings, particularly above 60 percent, can sound harsh. Users can connect external speakers or headphones via audio jack or Bluetooth options. Additionally, the projector can function as a Bluetooth speaker, though the fan noise remains active during this mode. The fan operates at 27dB, which is relatively quiet for a projector but may still be noticeable during quieter moments.

The PlayCube is powered by a 66Wh battery, which TCL claims can last up to three hours. Testing revealed it operated for precisely three hours and one minute while streaming *The Aviator* on Netflix, which runs for 2 hours and 50 minutes. Users can extend battery life by using a USB-C power bank, and the unit recharges in 104 minutes with a 65W USB-C charger.

Battery performance can fluctuate, particularly in warmer conditions, which may be linked to TCL’s power management during standby mode. The projector can be put to sleep with a short press of the power button, but the fan continues to draw power periodically. A firmware update may address these inconsistencies, allowing for a complete shutdown that takes around 80 seconds to restart.

Market Position and Comparison

TCL positions the PlayCube as an ideal projector for outdoor enthusiasts and campers. While the price point of $799.99 may seem steep, it offers a unique combination of brightness, portability, and battery life that is hard to find in competing models. For instance, the Xgimi Halo+ offers similar features but is larger and provides improved sound quality at a reduced price of $449.

In summary, TCL’s PlayCube projector stands out in the crowded market of portable projectors. With its fun design, impressive adaptability, and solid performance, it caters to a niche audience looking for a reliable option for both outdoor adventures and indoor entertainment. As the demand for portable viewing solutions grows, TCL’s PlayCube is set to make a significant impact.
