Micron to Retire Crucial Brand, Shifting Focus to AI Market

Micron Technology has announced the retirement of its Crucial brand, effectively ending the production of its budget-friendly solid-state drives (SSDs) and RAM kits. This decision, revealed on Wednesday, reflects a strategic shift by Micron to prioritize sales to artificial intelligence (AI) companies, which are rapidly increasing their demand for memory products.

The shift comes as Micron aims to enhance supply and support for larger customers, particularly those in high-growth sectors like AI. According to the company, this move will allow for better allocation of resources to meet the demands of its most significant clients. The end of the Crucial brand represents a significant loss for PC builders and enthusiasts, who have relied on Crucial’s affordable memory products.

The surge in demand for RAM, largely driven by AI projects, has already led to increased prices in the market. For instance, OpenAI recently secured a deal with SK Hynix and Samsung to produce up to 900,000 DRAM units per month for its Stargate project. With Crucial’s exit from the consumer market, the existing global memory shortage is expected to worsen, leaving fewer options for individual consumers.

As a result of this decision, companies such as CyberPowerPC, Framework, and Raspberry Pi are already feeling the pressure of rising RAM prices. HP has also indicated that it may need to raise prices on its devices or reduce the amount of memory included in its products.

Micron has stated that it will continue to ship Crucial products until the end of February 2026. The company has committed to providing warranty services and support for existing customers during this transition period.

This strategic pivot by Micron reflects broader trends in the technology sector, where AI continues to reshape market dynamics and drive demand for advanced computing solutions. As the company focuses its efforts on AI, the landscape for consumer memory products remains uncertain, raising concerns about accessibility and pricing for average users.
