Google Messages Introduces QR Code Feature for Contact Verification

Google Messages is set to enhance user security with a new feature that allows for contact verification through QR codes. This functionality is currently being rolled out in beta and aims to confirm the identity of individuals users are communicating with, ensuring that messages are exchanged securely.

9to5Google reported that the QR code key verification feature can be found in the latest beta version of Google Messages. Initially previewed in October 2023, the feature is nearing its public release. Users will be able to access this option under the “verify encryption” section within the application.

To utilize the feature, users will navigate to a conversation in Google Messages and tap on the contact’s name in the app bar to access the ‘Details’ page. Here, they will encounter an end-to-end encryption card. Previously, tapping “verify encryption” would display an 80-digit code, but the new feature introduces a “Security & privacy” section, allowing users to verify keys for their contacts.

According to Google, the ability to “verify keys” ensures that only the users involved in a conversation can read the Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages exchanged between them. The original 80-digit verification code will still be available for those who prefer that method, accessible by selecting “Compare verification codes.”

How QR Code Verification Works

The process for verifying keys is straightforward. Users can scan the QR code displayed on their contact’s device while asking the contact to scan their own QR code. Users can check the verification status by going to “Connected apps” in the Contacts app, where tapping “Your QR code” will open the relevant verification section for Google Messages.

Currently, the integration with the Google Contacts app is not yet live, but the QR code verification feature is expected to be available for devices running Android 9 and above later this year. This development also holds the potential for third-party applications to adopt a unified public key verification system.

As digital communication continues to grow, ensuring the authenticity of contacts is paramount. This new feature from Google Messages is a step forward in enhancing user security and privacy in messaging. With increasing concerns over data breaches and privacy violations, tools that help verify identities add an essential layer of protection for users.
