Anthropic has announced the integration of its AI model, Claude Code, with the workplace collaboration platform Slack. This development enables users to streamline their coding tasks by interacting with Claude as they would with any colleague. The integration aims to enhance productivity for developers, allowing them to incorporate AI assistance without disrupting their existing workflows.
According to a recent blog post by Anthropic, this integration follows the launch of Claude Opus 4.5, which the company claims has outperformed competitors in coding benchmarks. This advancement highlights a significant leap in both accuracy and efficiency, making the integration of Claude into Slack a timely enhancement for coding and development teams.
Enhanced Workflow with AI Assistance
The collaboration between Slack and Claude Code is designed to facilitate smoother communication and collaboration within coding projects. Anthropic stated that crucial context related to engineering tasks often resides in Slack discussions, including bug reports and feature requests. By tagging Claude in Slack, users can initiate a coding session that leverages this context.
“The critical context around engineering work often lives in Slack,” Anthropic noted. “When a bug report appears or a teammate needs a code fix, you can now tag Claude in Slack to automatically spin up a Claude Code session using the surrounding context.”
This functionality allows users to ask Claude Code to investigate bugs, conduct quick code reviews, and perform collaborative debugging, thereby making the development process more efficient. The AI can utilize information from team discussions to inform its approach to debugging and code modifications.
Using Claude Code in Slack
Anthropic has already developed an application that enables Slack to communicate with Claude. The new integration enhances this connection, allowing Claude to access more contextual information for coding tasks. When users mention @Claude in a message, the AI evaluates the request to determine if it pertains to coding. If so, a new Claude Code session is automatically initiated.
The integration’s key feature is its ability to gather context from recent channel and thread messages in Slack. Claude uses this information to select the appropriate repository for executing tasks, based on the repositories that users have authenticated on the web.
In addition to handling requests, Claude will provide updates within Slack threads. Once a task is completed, it will share a link to the full Claude session for review and a link to open a pull request, fostering transparency and collaboration among team members.
Currently, the Claude Code integration for Slack is in a research preview phase. This stage allows Anthropic to refine the tool and address any potential issues before a wider release. Accessing the integration requires users to have the Claude app installed in their Slack workspace, which can be found in the Slack App Marketplace.
Users must also authenticate their Claude accounts and ensure they have access to Claude Code on the web to effectively route coding tasks. This new integration signifies a step forward in the integration of AI within professional environments, potentially transforming how developers approach coding tasks in collaborative settings.
