Virginia A. Wilson, Beloved Matriarch, Passes Away at 87

Virginia Ann Wilson, a cherished matriarch and member of the Grand Forks community, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her children. Born on June 23, 1938, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Virginia dedicated her life to her family and her faith.

Virginia was the daughter of Maurice and Sophie (Reszka) Korynta. She married Merle Wilson on September 11, 1956, at St. Patrick’s Church in Minto, North Dakota. Their journey together was marked by a deep commitment to family and the church.

Throughout her life, Virginia fulfilled the role of a domestic engineer, taking joy in preparing family meals, baking caramel rolls, and cultivating her garden. Her devotion to her parish was evident as she became a longstanding member of St. Mary’s Church, where she served in various capacities, including as a liturgist, sacristan, and volunteer. Virginia was actively involved in the St. Mary’s Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, contributing significantly to church activities and community events.

Legacy and Family

Virginia is survived by her children, Greg (Lori) Wilson of Sedona, Arizona; Jeffrey (Carrie) Wilson, Janell (Dennis) Johnson, and Joanne Wilson, all of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and daughter-in-law Colleen Wilson of Gilbert, Arizona. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, with two more expected this winter.

Virginia’s family also includes her siblings, Daniel (Connie) Korynta and Ernie (Roxanne) Korynta of Grand Forks, Lenore (Ron) Houdek of Tolna, North Dakota, and Jean Johnson of Tacoma, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Wilson, her son, Randall Wilson, as well as several in-laws and her parents.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the medical team at the Altru Cancer Center, particularly acknowledging Dr. Abdul Hannan, NP Kayla Clausen, Annie Berginski, and Dr. Josh Deere, for their compassionate care during Virginia’s illness.

Memorial Services

In accordance with Virginia’s wishes, memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Mary’s Sanctuary Restoration Project, located at 216 Belmont Road, Grand Forks, North Dakota, or to Sacred Heart School at 200 3rd Street NW, East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Visitation will take place on July 20, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Amundson Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Forks, followed by a Rosary and Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. Additional visitation is scheduled for July 21, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the Mass of Christian Burial commencing at 11:00 a.m. Virginia will be laid to rest at the Memorial Park South Cemetery in Grand Forks.

The arrangements have been entrusted to the Amundson Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Grand Forks, North Dakota, ensuring that Virginia’s memory will be honored with the care she devoted to her family and community throughout her life.
