Celebrations erupted in the South Carolina Gamecocks football weight room on March 6, 2024, as head coach Shane Beamer surprised linebacker Jamian Risher Jr. with the news that he will receive a scholarship for the upcoming season. This moment marked a significant milestone for Risher, who joined the team as a walk-on in 2023.
Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 232 pounds, Risher has exhibited his versatility throughout his football journey. A four-year starter at multiple positions for Wade Hampton High School in Hampton, South Carolina, he played a pivotal role in leading the Red Devils to conference and region championships in both 2018 and 2019. He showcased his talent by participating in the North-South All-Star Game, where he began as free safety.
In 2022, Risher enrolled at the University of South Carolina and subsequently tried out for the football team. After successfully making the squad, he contributed to the special teams, appearing in the final six games of the 2023 season. This past season, Risher competed in three games and recorded his first career tackles against South Carolina State and Coastal Carolina, making two tackles in each game.
As Risher entered his redshirt senior season, the announcement from Coach Beamer came during a typical offseason workout—a moment that will undoubtedly be etched in his memory. The video of the announcement captured the heartfelt reaction from Risher and his teammates, highlighting the camaraderie and support within the team.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season
With his scholarship secured, Risher will be part of a linebacker core that includes returning starters Shawn Murphy and Fred “JayR” Johnson. The Gamecocks have commenced their offseason training program, gearing up for the spring and the upcoming fall season.
South Carolina is set to kick off the 2026 season against Kent State on September 5. As Risher steps into this new chapter of his football career, both he and the Gamecocks look forward to the challenges and opportunities that await in the coming season.
