San Diego FC Breaks Records with Bold MLS Playing Style

San Diego FC has made a remarkable entrance into Major League Soccer (MLS) with a bold playing style that challenges traditional norms. In a recent match against Nashville SC, backup goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega took an audacious risk during a crucial moment, ultimately contributing to his team’s winning goal. The expansion club, which debuted in 2025, is quickly establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with in the league.

Head coach Mike Varas, hired prior to the team’s first training session, emphasized a commitment to bravery in play. “Talk is cheap, I understand that… but we’re going to be brave to play,” he stated. This philosophy has translated into statistical records, with San Diego’s goalkeepers launching only 8.6 percent of open-play passes longer than 40 yards, the lowest in MLS history. Notably, this figure is even lower than that of elite European teams such as Barcelona and Manchester City.

Innovative Playing Style

The current MLS season has seen a significant increase in buildup play, with teams averaging 257 touches per game. However, San Diego FC stands out by recording an astounding 367 buildup touches per game. This commitment to playing from the back reflects a broader trend in soccer toward more intricate buildup strategies, influenced by renowned coaches like Pep Guardiola and Marcelo Bielsa.

Varas’s strategy is to draw opponents in, creating openings for quick transitions. “The idea is, how can we get the opponent to be attracted to the ball?” he explained. This often involves risky maneuvers, such as short passes under pressure and playing back to the goalkeeper, which allows the team to exploit defensive gaps.

The risks associated with this approach are evident, particularly when considering that San Diego’s starting back line averaged just 20 years old in the recent match against Nashville. This youthful defense is a byproduct of the club’s unique position within the Right to Dream network, which emphasizes youth development and innovative playing styles.

Youth Development and Risk-Taking

The Right to Dream organization, which also includes Denmark’s FC Nordsjaelland and has connections to Egyptian women’s team FC Masar, has set the foundation for San Diego’s ambitious model. This network prioritizes attracting pressure and playing quickly through tight spaces, which is a departure from the more conservative tactics often employed by expansion teams operating on a limited budget.

San Diego FC’s sporting director, Tyler Heaps, highlighted the importance of scouting players who embody the desired style rather than simply evaluating their current performance. “We challenge our scouts not to watch exactly what the player is doing, but to try to find traits that exemplify what we want to do,” he stated. This approach has led to the acquisition of promising young talents, including Luca Bombino, a left-back who has already attracted attention from clubs like West Bromwich Albion.

Despite their inexperience, the team’s strategy has proven successful. San Diego currently leads the MLS Western Conference and is on track to become the best expansion side in league history. Varas noted that placing players in challenging situations fosters bravery and adaptability, essential qualities for success at the highest level.

In conclusion, San Diego FC’s daring approach to soccer not only challenges conventional wisdom but also illustrates the potential for innovative tactics in modern football. As they continue to build on their early successes, the club’s commitment to a bold playing style and youth development could redefine expectations for expansion teams in MLS.
