Manny Pacquiao Revives ‘League of Destiny’ for Amateur Boxers

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has unveiled plans to relaunch his “League of Destiny,” an amateur boxing tournament, with the backing of the International Boxing Association (IBA). Initially proposed in 2023, the tournament aims to provide a platform for amateur boxers across multiple weight classes, spanning four seasons of 78 days each year.

During the IBA Sport + Business Forum in Istanbul, Pacquiao expressed his passion for the project. He highlighted his own journey in boxing, stating, “For two years, I applied to be part of the Philippine Olympic team, but politics stopped me. I turned professional at 16, even lying about my age because it was my only chance. Two years later, I became a world champion.” This personal narrative underscores his commitment to supporting grassroots boxing, as he aims to offer a “solid second chance” for budding talents.

While the specifics of the tournament’s format remain unclear, Pacquiao envisions the League of Destiny as a means to unite fighters from various nations and create a lasting legacy for future generations. “I am proud to work with IBA and with Umar to make this dream a reality,” he stated.

Emerging Initiatives in Boxing

The boxing landscape is currently vibrant with initiatives aimed at nurturing new talent. The WBC Boxing Grand Prix, designed for younger professional fighters, is set to conclude later this year, following its semi-final round this month and the final scheduled for December. Additionally, Dana White, a prominent MMA and boxing promoter, has revealed further details for Zuffa Boxing, a new promotion that may introduce rule changes, potentially redefining the sport.

In parallel, Pacquiao has also launched his own promotion, Manny Pacquiao Promotions, aimed at fostering up-and-coming talents in the United States. This initiative adds to the growing focus on developing the next generation of boxers.

The Future of Manny Pacquiao

At 46 years old, Pacquiao made headlines earlier this summer by returning to the ring, resulting in a draw against Mario Barrios, the WBC welterweight champion. Many observers believed he deserved the victory, leading to speculation about his next steps. He has announced plans for another boxing match in December 2023, although potential opponents remain unconfirmed.

As Pacquiao continues to engage with both amateur and professional boxing, his initiatives reflect a commitment to the sport that extends beyond his own illustrious career. With the League of Destiny and new promotional efforts, he seeks to inspire and cultivate the next wave of boxing talent.
