Jaguars Set to Showcase Starters, Including Travis Hunter, in Preseason Opener

The Jacksonville Jaguars will feature many of their starters, including rookie Travis Hunter, in their preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday night. Coach Liam Coen confirmed that the team aims to maximize the opportunity for players to experience game situations, particularly given the team’s new offensive and defensive systems.

Coen emphasized that the decision to play starters stems from the team’s need for cohesion and practice in real-time scenarios. “Everybody’s going to play in this game,” Coen stated during a press conference. “A lot of the guys want to play. Two new systems on both sides of the ball… We’ve got to go and probably take advantage of these opportunities.”

As of now, the Steelers have not disclosed whether they will also field any starters. Coen mentioned he planned to connect with Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin later to discuss their plans for the game.

Among those eager to take the field is quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has not participated in a live-ball situation since suffering a concussion in December 2022. Lawrence underwent season-ending shoulder surgery shortly after the injury. He expressed enthusiasm about returning to the field, stating, “I’ll be excited to get back out there. It’s been a while, so anytime you can play — even preseason — it means something to get on that field.”

This game holds particular significance for Lawrence as he navigates his third offensive system in five NFL seasons. He will be working with two new wide receivers, including Hunter, and two new starters on the offensive line. Additionally, the Jaguars have welcomed several new players on defense.

With the introduction of Travis Hunter—the second overall pick in the NFL draft and a former Heisman Trophy winner—the Jaguars are keen to see how he adapts to his dual role. Expected to serve as both a slot receiver and a backup cornerback, Hunter has begun practicing on both sides of the ball, showcasing his versatility.

Fellow cornerback Jourdan Lewis commented on Hunter’s mindset, saying, “He wants to prove people wrong. I feel like that’s the type of mindset you have to have to be a competitor out here. Of course he has all the skillsets, but I think it’s the mental aspect that makes him different.” Lewis added that Hunter is determined to excel at both positions, demonstrating an unmatched mental fortitude.

As the Jaguars prepare for their first preseason game, all eyes will be on both Lawrence and Hunter. Their performance could set the tone for a pivotal season ahead, as the team looks to build momentum and integrate new talent effectively. The matchup against the Steelers will not only serve as an early test but also as a platform for the Jaguars to refine their strategies ahead of the regular season.
