Hamilton Supports Verstappen’s Potential Move to Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton has expressed his support for Max Verstappen in the event of a potential move to Mercedes, stating he would have no issues with the Dutch driver joining the team. This endorsement comes as Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been attempting to recruit Verstappen from Red Bull since Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes to Ferrari for the 2024 season.

Wolff’s interest in Verstappen has intensified recently, particularly since Hamilton’s exit. Despite unsuccessful negotiations for the 2025 season, speculation is growing that Verstappen, a four-time world champion, could join Mercedes by 2026. This follows a controversial rivalry, particularly highlighted by the dramatic finish to the 2021 season where Verstappen clinched the championship after contentious officiating at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

At the recent British Grand Prix, Hamilton addressed the possibility of Verstappen wearing the silver and blue colors of Mercedes. He remarked, “Max didn’t do anything. He did what he needed to do in terms of winning, so I don’t think it would be a problem.” Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, conveyed his belief that Verstappen would find success in any team.

Hamilton elaborated on his views regarding both teams, acknowledging Red Bull’s impressive track record. “He’s coming from a great team,” Hamilton said, reflecting on his past comments about Red Bull being merely a drinks company. He added, “The truth is, Red Bull have been an incredible team. They’ve dominated for years.”

Hamilton’s Perspective on Team Dynamics

Hamilton’s comments underline the strong competitive spirit within Formula 1. He asserted that if anyone were to ask about Mercedes, he would unequivocally recommend the team. He praised the organization for its exceptional personnel and work environment, stating, “It’s an amazing team also with naturally the passion… it’s a great factory, a great environment to work in.”

A significant aspect of Verstappen’s potential transition to Mercedes would be the anticipated performance of their engine under new regulations set to take effect in 2026. As Red Bull prepares to manufacture their own engines for the first time, there are suggestions that they may lag behind Mercedes in development.

Hamilton highlighted that Verstappen’s decision would likely hinge on Mercedes’ engine performance, stating, “Mercedes will build an amazing engine next year because that’s what they are particularly strong at building. That would be the biggest part for sure.”

When asked if the notion of Verstappen racing for Mercedes was daunting, Hamilton remained unfazed. “Max in any car is a strong opponent. I don’t really think too much about it,” he said, indicating a focus on his own competitive strategies.

As the F1 calendar pauses before resuming at the Belgian Grand Prix from July 25-27, 2024, fans and analysts alike are keenly watching the developments surrounding these two drivers. The upcoming races will surely provide more clarity on the future dynamics within the sport.
