The upcoming football season in the Lancaster-Lebanon League promises to deliver another gripping contest, particularly in Section 2, where two dominant teams, Exeter and Conestoga Valley, are poised to battle for supremacy. Both teams have demonstrated formidable talent and resilience, setting the stage for a thrilling matchup that could define the season.
In a dramatic encounter during Week 9 of the previous season, Conestoga Valley secured a narrow victory over Exeter, winning 28-27. This pivotal game not only determined the Section 2 champion but also marked Conestoga Valley’s first title since 2006. A week later, they triumphed over Muhlenberg with a decisive 52-22 win, solidifying their position at the top of the league. Exeter’s late-game efforts included a 15-yard touchdown reception by Jayden Ware, but they fell short during a critical two-point conversion attempt.
The rivalry continued in the District 3 Class 5A semifinals, where Exeter exacted revenge with a commanding 48-14 victory over Conestoga Valley. As the new season approaches, both teams return a wealth of talent, suggesting another closely contested battle for the title.
For Conestoga Valley, the offense will be spearheaded by first-team LL seniors, quarterback Sawyer Esbenshade and wide receiver Josiah Garcia. Last season, Esbenshade threw for 2,078 yards and 25 touchdowns, while also contributing 419 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Garcia’s versatility was evident as he not only caught 18 receptions for 289 yards but also rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite losing key players such as Wide Receiver of the Year Jayden Johnson and Defensive Back of the Year Isaiah Sensenig, Conestoga Valley remains a formidable contender under the guidance of Coach of the Year Jon Scepanski. Coach Rob Flowers of Muhlenberg described the team as “getting it going lately” and expects them to remain competitive.
Exeter, which finished last season with a record of 12-2, also aims for a strong showing. Although they narrowly missed the Section 2 title and were defeated by Bishop McDevitt in the District 3 Class 5A championship, the Eagles are eager to make another deep postseason push in 2025. Senior quarterback Riley Martinez expressed confidence in his team, highlighting the determination of younger players ready to step into crucial roles.
Martinez, who earned second-team LL honors last season, threw for 1,016 yards and 16 touchdowns while facing adversity from a leg injury. Meanwhile, Ware’s significant contributions across all phases of the game earned him first-team LL honors as a kick returner, along with seven touchdown catches and three interceptions on defense. The void left by All-State selection Jayden Zandier will challenge Exeter, but younger players are primed to take over.
As the season approaches, other teams in Section 2 aim to rise in the rankings. Ephrata, with a record of 6-4, hopes to rebound after an impressive 12-2 campaign in 2023. Despite struggling against top-tier competition, they ended last season on a high note with a three-game winning streak.
Gov. Mifflin, who finished 5-6, faces challenges following the graduation of several key players, including fullback Grady Garner, who rushed for 1,400 yards and 19 touchdowns. New quarterback LeBron Leaf will need to step up, having averaged 11.5 yards per carry last season.
Muhlenberg, under second-year coach Rob Flowers, aims to improve from their 4-7 finish last season. They will rely on senior running back Cameron Small, who rushed for 2,051 yards and 23 touchdowns last season.
At the lower end of Section 2, Elizabethtown and Lebanon seek to rebuild. Elizabethtown finished with a 2-8 record and lost several key players, while Lebanon is still searching for its first win since 2020, currently on a 42-game losing streak.
As the new season unfolds, the competition in Section 2 will be intense, with Exeter and Conestoga Valley expected to lead the charge. Fans can anticipate a thrilling showdown as both teams vie for the top position, making every Friday night a must-watch event.
