For many players, earning a spot on a professional team is the culmination of years of dedication and ambition. Chelsea FC has seen countless athletes rise through the ranks, but not every player gets to don the club’s kit multiple times. A select few have only one appearance to their name, and they carry unique stories from that fleeting moment on the pitch.
The Athletic recently spoke to several of these individuals, each sharing their memories of that unforgettable day. Their experiences highlight the emotional journey of pursuing a dream while facing the realities of professional football.
Joe Sheerin: A Dream Debut
Joe Sheerin, now 48, recalls his debut on April 22, 1997, during a Premier League match against Wimbledon. As a lifelong Chelsea supporter who joined the youth system at eight, the moment was surreal. “I was just going out to train as normal when I was told I was in the first-team squad that night. I was like, ‘What?!’,” he shared.
Sheerin’s preparation included calling family and friends to share the news. “I had quite a few mates who were Wimbledon fans, so I managed to let them know,” he said. The game, held at Selhurst Park, featured notable players like Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola. With the match nearing its end and Chelsea leading 1-0, Sheerin was suddenly called to warm up.
“I remember Dennis Wise punching me in the back, saying, ‘Hurry up or you’re not going to get on’,” he recalled, laughing. Sheerin took the pitch at the 89th minute, marking a significant milestone in his life. “I think my legs were shaking a bit,” he admitted, but the experience was thrilling nonetheless.
Despite facing challenges in his career, including injuries and a stint at Bournemouth, Sheerin found his passion again at AFC Wimbledon. “I never enjoyed football as much as I did during my time there,” he reflected, grateful for the journey that led him to where he is today.
Anthony Grant: Facing Legends
Anthony Grant, now 38, also shared his journey, which began at Chelsea when he was just seven. He made his debut on May 10, 2005, at Old Trafford against Manchester United. “I was there during a time of big change,” he noted, referencing the transition to José Mourinho’s management.
Grant vividly recalls being told by Mourinho that he would come on during the match. “I think it was the 89th minute. I came on for Joe Cole,” he said. The experience was exhilarating, especially given the players he faced, including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. “When I look at it now, all the hard work I put in from seven years old to 17 was worth it,” he stated.
Reflecting on the competitive atmosphere at Chelsea, Grant acknowledged the struggles of young players today, saying, “How many people then were making their debuts at 17? Now, it’s normal.” He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities, particularly in a club with such a rich history and high expectations.
Xavier Simons: A Proud Moment
At just 22, Xavier Simons has already made his mark, debuting for Chelsea on December 22, 2021, in a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford. “I was around 14 when I signed for Chelsea after Brentford’s academy shut down,” he explained. Simons described the environment at Chelsea as remarkable, training with some of the best young talents in the country.
His debut came as a surprise after training with the first team leading up to the match. “When Thomas Tuchel showed the starting line-up, I was right wing-back. I think I played really well,” he reflected, acknowledging the nerves that come with such a significant moment.
Simons noted the support he received from teammates and the excitement of having his family in attendance. “My family is so proud that I can say I made an appearance for Chelsea,” he shared. While he aims to continue his career at the highest level, he remains thankful for the opportunities Chelsea provided.
These players, each with their own unique experiences, underscore the bittersweet nature of professional football. While the dream of a long career at a prestigious club may not have materialized for them, the memories they hold from their singular appearances are undoubtedly cherished. Their stories reflect the passion and dedication that define the sport, reminding us that every player’s journey is as unique as their time on the pitch.
