Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Surrounded by her husband, Clayton Mallard, and daughters, Jennifer and Gwendolyn, she left behind a legacy of love, community, and kindness.
Born on September 8, 1936, in California to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally spent her childhood in Torrance, where she attended local schools. It was at Torrance High School that she met her future husband, Clayton, in the 10th grade. Their bond grew stronger, leading to their marriage on August 5, 1956. Together, they shared 69 years of marriage.
Sally’s life was characterized by her dedication to family and her exceptional talents. She excelled in sewing, cooking, and baking, always striving to make those around her feel cherished. As the family moved across the United States for Clayton’s job—first to Atlanta, Georgia, then Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and back to Tustin, California—Sally embraced each new community, creating lasting friendships along the way.
A Life Dedicated to Family and Community
In 2002, the couple retired to Fallbrook, California, where they continued to foster connections with both old friends and new acquaintances. Sally was known for her hospitality, often hosting family gatherings, holiday dinners, and celebrations that brought joy to everyone involved. One of the notable events was the 60th reunion of the Torrance High School class of 1955, which took place at their home in Fallbrook.
Sally was also an active participant in her church community. Her kindness and thoughtfulness were evident in her interactions, as she consistently brought people together through her loving nature. An avid bridge player, she taught the game in Iowa and maintained an active group in Tustin. Even in her later years, she continued to play at the Fallbrook Senior Center, demonstrating her passion for social engagement.
Throughout her life, Sally embraced various interests, including tennis, which she took up in her thirties. She became a member of the Fallbrook Tennis Club, forming close friendships with other members, including the owners, Dorothy and Russ Roth.
Celebrating Milestones and Memories
Sally cherished the milestones in her life, from the birth of her four daughters to the weddings of her children and the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found immense joy in orchestrating memorable parties and gatherings, particularly relishing the celebration of her 50th wedding anniversary. This event was made even more special by the attendance of Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian AFS student who had lived with the family during the 1976-77 school year.
Sally is survived by her husband, Clayton, her three sisters—Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson—and her four daughters: Rebecca Mallard (Debbie), Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian (Mike), and Cynthia Swift (Larry). She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren—Spencer, Anastasia, Taylor, Dylan, Amanda, Farren, Nicolette, and Rachel—and great-grandchildren Londyn, Pharaoh, and Treasure, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sally’s vibrant spirit and loving nature will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege to know her. A memorial service for family and friends will be held on January 3, 2026, at 11 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook, providing an opportunity for those touched by her life to come together in remembrance.
