Protected Areas Boost Biodiversity Beyond Their Boundaries

Research conducted by Professor Graeme Cumming from the University of Western Australia has highlighted the significant impact that spillovers from protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife reserves, can have on biodiversity beyond their borders. Published on December 11, 2025, in the journal Nature, the study reveals how these spillovers can enhance ecosystem services, providing potential benefits that include climate mitigation, water retention, and erosion control.

The study examined vegetation spillovers—the differences in plant composition caused by protected areas—across Australia. Key findings indicate that a notable 71%, or 2,189 of the 3,063 measured protected areas, demonstrated vegetation spillovers within a 5-kilometer radius of their boundaries. This proportion declines as the distance increases. In Western Australia, certain protected areas, including Monadnocks Conservation Park, Lane Poole Reserve, and Beelu National Park, exhibited the most substantial spillover effects at this distance.

Understanding the Factors Behind Spillover Effects

Professor Cumming emphasized that these spillovers multiply the advantages of area-based conservation by broadening the range of habitats where endangered and beneficial species can thrive. “This knowledge can help make informed decisions to tackle ongoing biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation,” he stated.

The research indicates that local environmental variations, such as rainfall and topography, influence plant growth near protected area boundaries. Furthermore, the size of the vegetation spillover effect is affected by management practices within these protected areas. The analysis suggests that spillover effects can be predicted at broad scales by considering easily measurable environmental variables and management types.

Implications for Conservation Policy

The findings challenge the common perception that biodiversity conservation efforts should primarily focus on what exists within protected areas. Professor Cumming pointed out that increased attention to spillovers could reveal that these areas hold greater societal value than previously estimated.

“This research could help state and federal governments design policies that deliberately facilitate the spread of biodiversity and its associated benefits from protected areas,” he added. As conservation efforts evolve, understanding the implications of spillovers may play a critical role in enhancing the effectiveness of biodiversity protection strategies.

More details can be found in the study titled “Protected area management has significant spillover effects on vegetation,” published in Nature (2025), DOI: 10.1038/s41586-025-09837-8. The research underscores the importance of integrating spillover effects into conservation planning and management to foster a more resilient ecosystem.
