Former President Donald Trump has revoked the Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, effective September 1, 2025. This decision was confirmed through a memorandum that was reviewed by NOTUS and corroborated by a senior White House official. The memo instructs Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, to cease any security-related procedures previously authorized for Harris beyond those mandated by law.
According to established protocols, former presidents receive Secret Service protection for life, while former vice presidents, their spouses, and children under 16 are entitled to protection for six months after leaving office. For Harris, her standard protection would have concluded on July 21, 2025. However, former President Joe Biden extended Harris’ Secret Service detail for an additional year through an undisclosed directive prior to his departure from office.
Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, expressed gratitude toward the United States Secret Service, stating, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
Trump’s decision occurs as Harris, now the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, prepares for a multi-state tour to promote her new book, “107 Days,” which recounts her experiences during her unsuccessful presidential campaign. Initial reports regarding the cancellation of her Secret Service protection were first published by CNN.
Concerns Over Safety
The revocation of Harris’ protection raises concerns given the threats she has faced in the past. In August 2024, a man from Virginia was arrested for making death threats against her. Additionally, during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Harris was at the Democratic National Committee headquarters when authorities found a pipe bomb nearby.
Harris is not the first individual associated with the previous administration to have their security removed by Trump. In March 2023, Trump also revoked Secret Service protection for Biden’s adult children, Ashley Biden and Hunter Biden. Earlier this year, Trump indicated that he had rescinded security clearances for several officials from the Biden administration, including Biden and Harris themselves.
This decision underscores the ongoing political tensions in the United States and raises questions about the safety of public figures. As Harris embarks on her promotional tour, her supporters may be particularly concerned about her security in light of recent events.
The implications of Trump’s actions extend beyond Harris, highlighting a broader trend in the political landscape where security measures are increasingly scrutinized and politicized.
