Brian F. Hartnett, Influential Media Producer, Passes Away at 82

Brian F. Hartnett, an esteemed media producer and advocate for foster care, passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 82. He spent his final moments surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and compassion.

Born on May 28, 1943, in Hartford, Connecticut, Brian was the son of the late Francis “Frank” and Margaret (Landers) Hartnett. He was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, class of 1961. His passion for media began early; as a child, he created homemade 8mm films with friends, foreshadowing a lifelong career in broadcasting.

A Career in Media and Advocacy

Brian’s professional journey began immediately after high school at WTIC Radio, where he worked for 13 years. During this time, he produced the popular WTIC Hootenanny Road Show, showcasing his talent and creativity in the radio industry. Following this, he joined Phoenix-Home Life Insurance as a media producer, a role that took him across the United States and around the world for 21 years, producing numerous award shows.

A lifelong lover of classical music and old-time radio shows, Brian maintained a rich intellectual life, with reading being one of his favourite pastimes. His passion extended beyond personal interests; he and his wife, Katherine Hartnett, dedicated over 20 years to providing loving care for foster children in Connecticut. Their commitment made a significant impact in the community.

Legacy and Family

Brian was instrumental in pioneering a state law that provided essential medical insurance coverage for foster and adoptive children in Connecticut, reflecting his deep commitment to child welfare. This legislative achievement is a testament to his advocacy and compassion.

He is survived by his wife Katherine, their son Matthew Hartnett of Weymouth, Massachusetts, and twin daughters Angelina and Rebecca Hartnett. His family also includes granddaughter Allyson Graham, great-granddaughter Tayla Graham of Rochester, New York, sister-in-law Alice Hartnett, and many nieces and nephews from Manchester. He was predeceased by his daughter Donna Elizabeth Hartnett Graham and brother Robert Hartnett.

A calling hour to celebrate Brian’s life will be held on January 17, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a service at the funeral home. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Village For Families and Children.

Friends and family can share their condolences online at www.tierneyfuneralhome.com. Brian’s contributions to media and child welfare have left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
