Maggie Gyllenhaal has unveiled the trailer for her highly anticipated film, “The Bride!” which is set to premiere in theaters on March 6, 2024. This project marks Gyllenhaal’s entry into blockbuster filmmaking, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. The film reimagines the iconic character of The Bride of Frankenstein, placing her at the center of a fresh narrative that promises to explore the uncomfortable truths of human relationships.
During an exclusive digital event, Gyllenhaal discussed her approach to the film, emphasizing her desire to blend deep thematic elements with mainstream appeal. “I wanted to do that in a pop way,” she remarked, laughing. “I wanted to tell the truth in a way that was hot.” This reflects her artistic journey, having previously garnered acclaim for her directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter.”
Reviving a Classic Character
“The Bride!” draws inspiration from both Mary Shelley‘s original Gothic novel and the classic 1935 film, “Bride of Frankenstein,” famously portrayed by Elsa Lanchester. Gyllenhaal noted the significance of Lanchester’s performance, highlighting how impactful it was for a character with minimal dialogue to leave such a lasting impression in popular culture.
The newly released trailer, set to the music of Florence & The Machine with their song “Everybody Scream,” encapsulates the film’s punk and gothic elements, while offering glimpses into the Bride’s complex relationship with Frankenstein. Gyllenhaal described her interpretation of Frankenstein as “smart, vulnerable, and tough,” acknowledging the darkness inherent in his character. “He does some f- up stuff, as monsters do,” she stated, adding, “As we all do.”
A Star-Studded Ensemble
The trailer also showcases a remarkable ensemble cast, including Penelope Cruz and Annette Bening. Gyllenhaal considers Cruz’s portrayal of Myrna as a standout performance, unlike any in her previous work. Bening takes on the role of a “mad scientist” who collaborates with Frankenstein in reviving The Bride.
In a personal touch, Gyllenhaal also cast her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, and her husband, Peter Sarsgaard. This collaboration marks their first joint project since 2001’s “Donnie Darko.” Gyllenhaal expressed her desire to ensure that working together would enhance their relationship, stating, “I loved it.”
The anticipation surrounding “The Bride!” signals a significant moment in Gyllenhaal’s career as she expands her creative horizons. With a blend of horror, drama, and a focus on human truths, the film is poised to attract a diverse audience when it hits theaters in early March.
