Jasmine Crockett Launches Senate Campaign, Shaping Texas Race

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett is set to officially announce her candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Monday, a move that could significantly alter the dynamics of the race for the seat currently held by Republican John Cornyn. Her entry into the contest comes just ahead of the candidate filing deadline for the March 3, 2024, Democratic primary, where she will face notable opponents including former U.S. Representative Colin Allred and state Representative James Talarico.

Crockett’s anticipated announcement, scheduled for 4:30 p.m., is expected to highlight her vision for a more progressive Texas, especially in light of the upcoming general election against the winner of the Republican primary, which features Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt. Political analysts suggest that the Democratic primary will focus on which candidate can best represent the party’s interests during an era dominated by former President Donald Trump.

According to Kardal Coleman, chairman of the Dallas County Democratic Party, “Voters are looking for someone who’s unapologetic in defending our values and who is plain spoken and knows how to speak the language of the everyday person.” Coleman emphasized that while all candidates are skilled campaigners, the one who resonates most with Texas Democrats will likely achieve success.

Candidates have until 6 p.m. on Monday to file for the upcoming primaries. Crockett brings considerable political experience to her Senate campaign. Currently in her second term representing District 30, which encompasses parts of Dallas, she won her seat in 2022 after being selected as the successor to the late trailblazing Democrat Eddie Bernice Johnson. Her rise in politics began with a successful underdog campaign against former state Representative Lorraine Birabil.

In Congress, Crockett has gained a reputation for her outspoken criticism of Trump and his supporters, engaging in notable public disputes with Republican representatives such as Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace. Her remarks at a California dinner in March, where she referred to Texas Governor Greg Abbott as “governor hot wheels,” drew criticism but also increased her visibility as a formidable candidate. Abbott has used a wheelchair since a 1984 incident that left him partially paralyzed.

Crockett’s strong national profile and fundraising capabilities set her apart in the crowded Democratic field. She has amassed over $4.6 million in her congressional campaign account, positioning her as a frontrunner according to a recent poll conducted by the University of Houston-Texas Southern University. The survey indicated that Crockett leads the current and potential Democratic Senate candidates with 31% support, while Talarico and former Vice President Beto O’Rourke follow with 25%. Allred trails with 13% support.

Her Senate campaign comes after a recent Republican redistricting effort that effectively removed her from District 30. The Supreme Court’s ruling last week allows Texas to implement the new district maps for the 2026 election. Despite this setback, Crockett’s fundraising prowess and national recognition would likely enable her to return to the House, potentially representing one of the remaining Democratic-leaning seats in the Dallas area.

Crockett has emphasized the importance of regaining control of the Senate to advance the Democratic agenda, highlighting that flipping Texas would significantly contribute to achieving that goal. Her candidacy also reflects a historic opportunity; a Black woman has never won a statewide office in Texas, and she would be the first person of color from the state to serve in the Senate.

As Crockett prepares to join the race, both Talarico and Allred will need to adapt their strategies. Talarico, who has energized the Democratic base since entering the race in September and raised more than $6 million in just one month, has positioned himself as a charismatic leader capable of challenging Trump. His dynamic speaking style has attracted crowds during rallies.

Conversely, Allred, who announced his candidacy in July and has conducted numerous campaign events across Texas, faces the challenge of demonstrating to Democratic voters that he can effectively compete in a potentially contentious general election. Despite having lost a high-profile Senate race to Ted Cruz last year, Allred has retained a loyal following. Yet, with Crockett’s entry, he may lose support in North Texas and the Houston area, where he has historically garnered backing from Black voters and women.

As the primary approaches, the Texas Senate race is shaping up to be a pivotal contest that could influence the broader political landscape. All eyes will be on the candidates as they prepare for the upcoming challenges ahead.
