Voters in Dothan, Alabama, finalized three municipal races on August 5, 2023, during runoff elections that determined the outcomes for two city commission seats and one school board position. The results reflected the preferences of voters from the previous month, as the leading candidates in each race maintained their momentum to secure victory.
In the City Commission District 2 race, where incumbent Aristotle Kirkland opted not to seek re-election, Phillipe Kirksey claimed the seat with a total of 257 votes, defeating challenger Derrick Tiller, who received 194 votes. For Kirksey, this win was particularly significant, as he had previously lost to Kirkland in his bid for the same position four years ago. Outside the Dothan Civic Center, he expressed gratitude for the support he received, stating, “We all worked hard.” He emphasized the collaborative effort that led to his success, pointing to a van filled with supporters as testament to the team effort involved.
In another key race, incumbent Bradley Bedwell faced a runoff against David Haight after failing to secure a majority in the initial election. Bedwell managed to prevail convincingly, garnering 398 votes compared to Haight’s 252. Following the election, Bedwell was unavailable for comment; however, his decisive win indicates strong support within his district.
The District 5 school board race also concluded with a narrow victory. Ashley Whitfield Davis edged out J.T. Carroll by a mere 15 votes, winning the position vacated by outgoing board member Amy Bonds with a final tally of 428 to 413. Following her victory, Davis expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited to get to work. It’s a victory for Dothan City Schools’ teachers and students.”
The newly elected officials will be formally sworn into office on October 6, 2023, marking the beginning of their terms and the implementation of their plans for the Dothan community. The elections demonstrate the active engagement of local voters in shaping their governance, highlighting a commitment to civic participation in the democratic process.
