Walter J. Tryon Sr., a respected member of the Guilderland community, passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on July 30, 1931, in Albany, New York, he was the son of the late Ernest F. and Oliva A. Tryon. A lifelong resident of Albany County, Tryon dedicated his life to both family and service.
Walter graduated from Voorheesville Central School District in 1950. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a helicopter mechanic during the mid-1950s, with a notable deployment to Greenland. His commitment to service laid a foundation for a life characterized by hard work and community involvement.
After his military service, Walter pursued a career as an automotive mechanic. He worked at several establishments, including Don Allen Chevrolet, Marsh Hallman Chevrolet, and DePaula Chevrolet in Albany. His passion for machinery extended beyond his profession; he enjoyed restoring antique engines, tractors, and other equipment. Later in life, he took a position at French’s Hollow Fairways in Guilderland Center.
Community Engagement and Family Life
Walter was a lifetime member of the Hudson Mohawk Chapter of the Pioneer Gas Engine Association. This involvement reflected his love for mechanical engineering and community engagement. He also cherished the time spent with family during summers in the Adirondacks, where camping, boating, and fishing became cherished traditions.
Walter is survived by his son, Walter J. Tryon Jr. (Jamie), his daughter, Diane LaForte (Thomas), and his granddaughter, Amanda LaForte. He also left behind beloved canine companions, Emma, Shea, and Ghost. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn B. Rudesheim, whose memory he held dear throughout his life.
Friends and community members can pay their respects during calling hours on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals in Colonie. A service will follow the calling hours, and a burial is scheduled for spring at Hannacroix Rural Cemetery.
