Susan Elizabeth Kerr Hughes, a beloved member of the Virginia Beach community, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on May 21, 1931, in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Charles Stevens Kerr and Marjorie Beatrice Kerr Steele.
After graduating from Granby High School in January 1949, Susan pursued her education at the College of William and Mary. She married William C. Hughes on September 13, 1952, and together they built a life in the Tidewater area following his graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1954. The couple shared 69 years of marriage until William’s passing in 2021.
Family Legacy and Community Impact
Susan was preceded in death by her husband and her sister, Marjorie Kerr Davis. She leaves behind a loving family that includes her brother, William Steele (Kathy); her son, William C. Hughes (Carina); and her daughters, Susan Hughes, Marianne Boyd (David), and Christine Brown (Rodger). Known affectionately as “Meemaw,” she cherished her role as a grandmother to eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Susan was known for her warmth and kindness, making a significant impact on those around her in Virginia Beach. Her contributions to the community will be remembered, as she touched many lives during her long and fulfilling journey.
Memorial Service Details
A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Forest Lawn Cemetery, located at 8100 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23505. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate Susan’s life and legacy.
