Students and administrators at Canyon Crest Academy in California are expressing outrage after the school’s foundation rented its gym for a commercial filming project that aired an adult game show featuring offensive content. The incident occurred last weekend and has sparked demands for stricter oversight of the foundations that manage fundraising and facility rentals for the district’s high schools.
The game show, titled “24-Hour Tag,” was produced by the online content company PaymoneyWubby and Fansly, a subscription-based platform for adult content. During the broadcast, contestants engaged in activities that included profanity, sexually suggestive acts, and racist statements, which have drawn significant criticism from the community.
The San Dieguito Union High School District stated that the Canyon Crest Academy Foundation, an independent nonprofit, had rented the gym. The district emphasized that the content produced appeared to violate both the terms of the agreement and the community standards set by the district.
“We understand that the production company filmed a game show with highly inappropriate content,” the district said in a statement. “Our top priority is always the safety and support of our students.” The district is now considering legal action against those involved to address the violation of school policies.
The foundation approved the rental on October 9, 2023, without being informed of the nature of the show. They believed it would be suitable for a PG-13 audience. In a follow-up statement, Regina Twomey, executive director of the foundation, acknowledged that they failed in their oversight responsibilities and apologized to the school community. Twomey confirmed that the foundation is reviewing its policies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The agreement for renting the gym did not specify content guidelines, although the facility use terms generally prohibit profane language and illegal activities. The foundation is now working with legal counsel to evaluate potential actions against the production company.
Videos from the live stream captured scenes from the gym, which prominently featured school branding, including the school’s raven mascot. The inappropriate actions depicted in the show included contestants licking chocolate fondue off women’s feet and presenting slides with derogatory comments, raising concerns about the impact on the school’s reputation.
As the community grapples with the fallout, the school board is considering a memorandum of understanding to enhance transparency and operational requirements for the foundations that manage school resources. This proposal comes after an external audit revealed discrepancies in the foundations’ financial practices, prompting the need for reform.
The San Dieguito school board plans to finalize its proposed reforms by January 2024, which may restrict the foundations’ ability to rent school facilities and retain the revenue. The need for stricter regulations is evident as the district seeks to maintain the integrity of its educational environment and safeguard the interests of its students.
