Mary Ann Phibbs, a lifelong resident of New York, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 89 in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Known for her dedication to family, community, and her passions, Phibbs leaves behind a rich legacy, including her wife of 45 years, Marilyn MacBride, and beloved nieces, Kathleen Phibbs Brown and Elizabeth Phibbs Roff.
Born on June 27, 1936, in Schenectady, Phibbs was the daughter of the late John Xavier and Agnes Smith Phibbs. She graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree from The College of Saint Rose, all while balancing a full-time job. Her career at the Department of Motor Vehicles spanned over four decades, where she rose from the stenographic pool to become the Manager of Personnel.
A Passion for Golf and Gardening
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Phibbs was a passionate golfer. She made history as the first woman to achieve a hole-in-one at the Stadium Golf Course. Her talent earned her the title of club champion twice at the Stadium Country Club, and she also excelled in various Member Guest Tournaments.
Phibbs dedicated herself to gardening as well, serving as an Albany County Master Gardener Volunteer for 20 years. She achieved Emeritus Status for her contributions, answering public gardening inquiries, maintaining community gardens, and participating in Garden Education Day. Her home gardens were a testament to her love for horticulture.
A Committed Community Member
Phibbs was also deeply involved in community service. She held the position of vice president at Our Brothers Keepers, an organization focused on raising funds for AIDS-related support services. Her dedication to these causes exemplified her commitment to helping those in need.
Family and friends have been invited to celebrate her life with visitations scheduled for November 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 18:00 at McVeigh Funeral Home, located at 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY. The funeral service will take place on November 25, 2025, at 10:30, at The Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell Street, Albany, NY, where a Funeral Mass will be held. Following the service, the Rite of Committal will occur at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, NY.
In honor of her memory, contributions can be made to her favorite charities, including the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the ASPCA, or the Sierra Club.
