In a remarkable season that showcased his talent and determination, Kyan Phillips of Lincoln High School has been honored as the Santa Clara County Player of the Year by the Bay Area News Group. His performance during the playoffs was particularly noteworthy, marking him as one of the standout athletes in the region.
Phillips led his team through a series of impressive victories, culminating in a championship run that captured the attention of local fans. He delivered a stunning performance in the CCS Division IV championship game, scoring six touchdowns and leading the Lions to a decisive 49-21 victory over Branham. This display of skill set the stage for an exhilarating postseason.
Postseason Triumphs Highlight Phillips’ Legacy
In the subsequent CIF NorCal 6-AA championship game, Phillips faced adversity as he played through a severely bruised knee. Despite the injury, he managed to score two rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner, helping Lincoln secure the regional title. His resilience was on full display as he also contributed to a crucial defensive stop that sealed the victory.
The Lions faced Valley Center in the state championship matchup, where Phillips continued to shine. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown, caught a long pass for another score, and added two rushing touchdowns, all while battling ongoing knee issues and a visible limp. The game ended in a heart-wrenching 36-35 loss, yet Phillips’ performance solidified his status as a key player for Lincoln.
Reflecting on the season, Lincoln’s head coach, Kevin Collins, praised Phillips, stating, “We got Kyan Phillips and a bunch of dudes that are playing ball.” This sentiment underscores Phillips’ pivotal role within the team, as he consistently deflected praise to his teammates and the offensive line.

After the state championship game, Phillips reflected on the challenges faced throughout the season. “It’s tiring, for sure,” he admitted. “We had a lot of injuries and sicknesses, but everyone fought through it and played to the end. We played well as a team. We’ve competed all the way to the end of every game. One point away from winning this game, just like all the other games. That’s all I can say.”
