PITTSFIELD — On December 24, 2023, the Christian Center mobilized local volunteers to deliver Christmas meals to 118 residents in need across Pittsfield and Dalton. Instead of enjoying a traditional Christmas Eve at home, about 20 community members gathered to pack and distribute meals, demonstrating their commitment to supporting those who might otherwise be alone during the holidays.
Amanda Masoero and Katie Lefkowitz, two volunteers, expressed their shared joy in participating in the event, stating, “Doing it together” was their favorite part of the experience. This initiative has become especially significant since the local Meals on Wheels program pauses for the holiday season, leaving many without meal delivery.
Jason Cuyler, president of the Christian Center’s board of directors, emphasized the organization’s mission: “We want to help this community in any way we possibly can. Whenever there’s a need, we’ll be there.” This marks the second year that the Christian Center has organized this program in collaboration with Elder Services of Berkshire County, taking over responsibilities after the Civitan Club ended its long-standing Christmas meal deliveries.
The impact of the meal delivery extends beyond nourishment; it fosters a sense of community connection. Karen Ryan, food director and services coordinator, highlighted the importance of human interaction, stating, “It’s about letting them know that someone cares.” Many volunteers took pleasure in witnessing the smiles of older adults as they opened their doors to receive meals.
Among the volunteers was Sheriff Tom Bowler, who noted the gratification of bringing joy to others. His team from the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office assisted with packaging and delivery, contributing to a distribution that included turkey, various side dishes, pie, and candy.
The turkeys, donated by local residents, were prepared by sheriffs and inmates at the Berkshire County Jail and House of Corrections before being packaged at the Christian Center. Most of the food came from donations, with only a few items requiring purchase.
“It brings out the joy in Christmas to be able to do things like this,” Cuyler said. Volunteers showcased their Christmas spirit through festive attire, including vibrant sweaters and holiday accessories, creating a lively atmosphere during the packing process.
Pat Masoero, the center’s financial coordinator, led the assembly line of volunteers, including her daughter Amanda. Sporting reindeer antlers, she remarked on the rewarding nature of the work, saying, “To give them a Christmas meal, it’s just a joy.”
As the volunteers prepared to deliver meals, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of purpose and camaraderie, illustrating the true spirit of the holiday season. The initiative not only ensured that residents received nourishing meals but also reinforced the community’s commitment to supporting one another, especially during a time when many may feel isolated.
