On December 5, 2023, Central Texas residents have the opportunity to participate in Giving Tuesday through the Statesman’s Season for Caring initiative. This program connects community members with various local nonprofits dedicated to addressing critical issues such as homelessness, medical crises, food insecurity, and more. Donations made during this campaign will be matched up to $500,000 by philanthropist Brian Sheth.

The Season for Caring allows individuals to contribute to 12 selected families or individuals who have been nominated by vetted nonprofits. Each year, the editorial team at the Statesman identifies these recipients based on their specific needs, ensuring that the funds raised directly impact those most vulnerable in the community. “We’ve given for years because the Statesman does a great job identifying families who need help,” said donor Jim Taylor, reflecting on his contributions last year.

This annual charity program not only supports the featured families but also assists hundreds of others within the network of nonprofits. The funds often serve as emergency resources that help prevent evictions, maintain utility services, or cover medical expenses. “Our community relies on it,” stated Doug Mudd, executive director of Community Action, emphasizing the trust built between the nonprofits and the families they serve.

How to Contribute to the Campaign

Those wishing to support the Season for Caring can choose from multiple donation methods. Monetary contributions are the most effective, with options to designate funds to specific families or agencies or contribute to a general fund that will be divided among all recipients. Donations can be made online at statesman.com/seasonforcaring or via checks mailed to the Austin Community Foundation at 4315 Guadalupe St., Suite 300, Austin, TX 78751.

In addition to financial donations, community members can participate by donating items from the featured families’ wish lists available online. The initiative encourages groups, such as workplaces or community organizations, to adopt families and provide assistance through either monetary gifts or tangible items. Individuals can also consider hosting gatherings where guests are asked to donate in lieu of traditional gifts.

Other ways to help include offering services, such as car repairs or home maintenance, to families in need. Local businesses, like Firehouse Animal Health Center and P. Terry’s, have also committed to supporting the Season for Caring, further amplifying the community’s engagement.

The Impact of Season for Caring

The Statesman has committed to sharing the stories of all 12 featured families until January 31, 2024. The coverage aims to foster a deeper connection between the community and those receiving aid. “Sometimes you just need to meet people where they are at, and Season for Caring funds help us do that,” said Simone Talma Flowers, executive director of Interfaith Action of Central Texas.

With the matching donation opportunity, every contribution made this Giving Tuesday has the potential to double its impact. This initiative not only provides immediate aid but also strengthens the fabric of the Central Texas community by highlighting shared values of compassion and support.
