With deep roots in journalism, Retzlaff dedicated over 70 years to reporting and writing, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.

Early Life and Career

Born in 1931 in Faribault, Minnesota, Bob graduated from Faribault High School in 1949. His high school years were marked by athletic achievement as a multi-sport athlete in baseball, basketball, and his true passion, golf. He also began honing his skills in photography and journalism as a contributor to the high school newspaper.

In January 1951, Retzlaff enlisted in the US Army Reserves. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant with the 328th Ordnance Company, participating in significant events such as the activation during the Berlin crisis. After a brief transfer to Fort Polk, Louisiana, his unit returned to Faribault, culminating in his honorable discharge in February 1963.

A Legacy in Journalism

Retzlaff began his newspaper career at the Faribault Daily News, where he worked from 1949 to 1959. He later joined the Rochester Post Bulletin, where he made his mark from 1959 until his retirement in 2019. During his tenure, he held various positions, including general reporter, news editor, and managing editor. His final role was as a travel editor, a position that allowed him to share his adventures with readers.

Bob married Sandra Lorge, the society editor at the Faribault Daily News, on September 26, 1959. The couple enjoyed a 40-year marriage until Sandra’s passing in May 2000. They had two children and four grandchildren, all of whom were a source of pride and joy for Bob.

Throughout his career, Retzlaff traveled extensively, visiting every continent and sailing on all seven seas. His travels included remarkable experiences, such as walking along the Arctic Circle and throwing a snowball in Antarctica. His articles vividly captured the essence of the cultures and cuisines he encountered, inspiring readers to explore the world alongside him.

Community Engagement and Final Years

Bob was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Rochester and participated in numerous civic organizations. His contributions helped shape Rochester into a hub of technology and commerce in the Midwest.

In recent years, Retzlaff received compassionate care from his physicians at the Mayo Clinic and the staff at Prelude Homes and Cottagewood Senior Community. His final years were marked by comfort and support from those around him.

Bob’s influence extended beyond his written words; he embodied humility, respect, and a love for life. His stories, preserved in the digital age, will continue to resonate with those who knew him and those who read his work.

A celebration of Bob Retzlaff’s life will be held at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes on October 15, 2025, from 16:00 to 18:00. His absence will be keenly felt by family, friends, and the community he served with dedication and passion.
