A peace lily can be a delightful addition to any home, but when it stops blooming, it can be frustrating for plant enthusiasts. Linda Hauser from Algonquin inquired about how to encourage her peace lily to flower again after enjoying its beauty for a year and a half.
Peace lilies, scientifically known as Spathiphyllum, are popular houseplants due to their attractive foliage and ease of care. These evergreen tropical plants thrive in rainforest conditions, which means they prefer specific environmental factors to flourish. While it is common for people to purchase peace lilies when they are in bloom, many are surprised to learn that these plants can be erratic in their flowering habits.
According to Tim Johnson, senior director of horticulture at the Chicago Botanic Garden, there are several strategies to promote blooming in peace lilies. A healthy, mature peace lily should produce flowers approximately every couple of months. The colorful part of the plant that many mistake for the flower itself is actually called the spathe, a modified leaf that encases the flower cluster.
One potential issue for Hauser could be inadequate lighting. Peace lilies are known for tolerating low-light environments, but they may struggle to flower in extremely dark conditions. Johnson recommends placing the plant on an east-facing windowsill or near a south- or west-facing window to provide bright, indirect light.
In addition to lighting, temperature plays a crucial role in the health of peace lilies. During the summer months, when temperatures remain above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, moving the plant outdoors to a shaded area can be beneficial. However, it is important to avoid exposing the plant to direct sunlight, as this could lead to leaf burn.
Fertilization is another important aspect of plant care. Johnson suggests using a diluted fertilizer specifically formulated for peace lilies twice a month during the growing season. Furthermore, maintaining evenly moist, well-drained soil is essential for promoting growth and flowering. While the plant is actively growing, it is advisable to allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Regular maintenance can also enhance the plant’s overall appearance and health. Wiping dust off the leaves with a damp cloth and trimming any yellowing leaves can keep the peace lily looking vibrant. Additionally, removing spent flowers encourages further blooming.
For those experiencing persistent issues with their peace lily, it is worth noting that older plants may not flower as readily as younger specimens. If all else fails, Johnson suggests acquiring another peace lily for a better chance at enjoying its blooms.
