Abriendo Puertas Provides Lifeline for Latino Domestic Violence Survivors

The Abriendo Puertas program is transforming the landscape of support for Latino survivors of domestic violence in Delaware. With a focus on providing essential resources, this initiative addresses the unique challenges faced by the Latino community, which often include language barriers, fear of immigration enforcement, and limited access to transportation. Established in the early 2000s, Abriendo Puertas has become a crucial lifeline for those seeking safety and support.

Mission and Services of Abriendo Puertas

According to Sue Ryan, the executive director of the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the program ensures that all services are accessible in Spanish, breaking down one of the primary barriers to seeking help. “I know that all of the domestic violence services in Delaware do that,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of tailored support for Spanish-speaking individuals. This initiative began as part of La Esperanza in Georgetown and became an extension of the Peoples Place public service agency in 2009, highlighting the urgent need for bilingual resources.

Nancy Castellanos, director of Abriendo Puertas, articulates the essence of their mission: “Abriendo Puertas is the opportunity for a safe place, the opportunity to be heard, a door that opens for them to feel safe.” The program aims to provide a secure environment for women and their children, helping them navigate the complexities of domestic violence situations.

Beyond immediate shelter, Abriendo Puertas offers a range of services including referrals for protection orders, domestic violence education, and support for medical and legal appointments. “The assistance here involves referrals to different programs they can access,” Castellanos explained. This comprehensive approach empowers survivors to regain control over their lives.

Challenges Facing the Latino Community

In Delaware, domestic violence remains a significant issue, with over 25,000 reported incidents in the past year. Statistically, approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience abuse. Ryan notes, “There has definitely been an increase over the years in the number of domestic violence incidents. These statistics are very real, but the personal impact of this violence is very devastating.”

For many in the Latino community, the fear of contacting law enforcement due to immigration status compounds the challenges of escaping abusive relationships. Castellanos highlighted that language barriers further complicate the situation, stating, “If I don’t speak English, how are they going to understand what I’m going through?” Transportation limitations in Sussex County also hinder access to vital services, making it difficult for survivors to seek help.

Abriendo Puertas addresses these barriers by providing support through a dedicated hotline, where staff members listen to survivors without pressuring them for immediate decisions. The program primarily serves women and children but also extends its resources to men in need of assistance.

This year alone, Abriendo Puertas has sheltered approximately 70 survivors while aiding many others in navigating their paths to safety without requiring shelter. Castellanos emphasizes the importance of meeting survivors where they are, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of their support needs.

In a broader context, the lack of affordable housing continues to be a significant factor keeping some survivors trapped in abusive situations. Advocates are pushing for more comprehensive solutions, including the establishment of Family Justice Centers that would consolidate various support services in a single location, making it easier for survivors to access help.

For those experiencing domestic violence, resources are available 24 hours a day. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, reaching out to local support networks can be a crucial first step towards safety and recovery.
