Recent data from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) reveals that over half of therapists working with men experiencing addiction have observed an increase in problematic pornography use over the past year. Specifically, 53% of the nearly 3,000 accredited therapists surveyed reported that individuals are seeking help for porn usage that disrupts their daily lives and leads them to explore more extreme content.
The BACP’s findings highlight a growing concern among mental health professionals about the implications of pornography consumption on personal relationships and individual responsibilities. Many clients are arriving at therapy sessions with issues such as erectile dysfunction, often referred by NHS sexual health clinics. Therapists indicate that these issues are frequently linked to excessive porn consumption.
Call for a Comprehensive National Strategy
Dr. Paula Hall, a leading expert in sex and porn addiction, is advocating for the UK government to address the rising problem of porn addiction. She emphasizes that this issue affects “significant numbers” of individuals across all demographics. Dr. Hall underlines the urgent need for a national strategy that not only addresses the economic costs associated with porn addiction but also focuses on men’s mental health and the resources available for young people.
“In the current climate, the government is not doing enough,” Dr. Hall stated. She highlighted that while discussions around age verification and violence against women have surfaced, there is a pressing requirement for a comprehensive strategy to address the harms caused by pornography. “This is not about an anti-porn crusade, but understanding that for many, porn leads to significant harm,” she explained.
Dr. Hall founded Pivotal Recovery, a nonprofit online self-help resource aimed at assisting those grappling with problematic porn use. She also established the Laurel Centre, which specializes in treating sex and porn addiction and training therapists to support affected clients. The demand for such services is increasing as more individuals recognize their struggles.
Understanding the Spectrum of Porn Addiction
The stigma surrounding porn use creates a sense of isolation for many individuals, which can hinder their willingness to seek help. Dr. Hall described porn addiction as a spectrum disorder that often starts as a recreational activity but can escalate into more problematic usage. “It becomes habitual and a method of escaping uncomfortable emotions,” she noted.
Many clients initially do not identify their porn use as problematic and instead seek treatment for anxiety, depression, or relationship issues. Andrew Harvey, a BACP-accredited therapist in Nottingham, points out that porn addiction frequently leads to significant personal challenges, including neglecting studies, work, or intimacy with partners.
“The novelty offered by online porn can surpass that of a partner, leading to a decline in intimate relationships,” Harvey explained. He added that many individuals feel compelled to seek out increasingly extreme content to satisfy their urges, which can create confusion regarding their sexual preferences.
While there is ongoing debate about whether pornography can be classified as an addiction, many users report that it significantly interferes with their daily lives. Some individuals find themselves watching porn for hours, struggling to complete basic tasks as a result. Harvey noted, “For many of us working in the field, it certainly feels like addiction. Clients often describe their experiences using that term because it resonates with their struggles.”
Treatment approaches do not advocate for the complete abstention from sexual content but aim to help individuals navigate their relationship with pornography in a healthier manner. “The goal is for individuals to find joy in their sexuality rather than feeling out of control,” Harvey stated.
As therapists continue to see an increase in clients struggling with problematic porn usage, the call for a national strategy to address this growing issue becomes ever more pressing. Through awareness and early intervention, mental health professionals hope to foster an environment where individuals feel empowered to seek help and address their challenges.
