A South Milwaukee entrepreneur has introduced an innovative mobile dog gym, offering a unique fitness solution for dogs. Andrea Tripp, the owner of Alt Dog Run, has converted a large vehicle into a gym featuring two treadmills specifically designed for dogs. This service aims to provide an alternative to traditional dog walking, particularly during the harsh Wisconsin winters.
The concept emerged from Tripp’s desire to keep her own dogs active despite the challenges posed by extreme weather. “In Wisconsin, our winters can be brutal, and it’s hard to take your dog out for even five minutes,” Tripp explained. The mobile gym allows dogs of all sizes to exercise at their own pace, as they are harnessed to a chain attached to the treadmill, enabling them to run as fast or slow as they wish.
Tripp initially began her venture in her basement, providing additional exercise for her pets. As demand grew, she officially launched the business earlier this year and hit the road with the gym. In addition to treadmill sessions, Alt Dog Run offers dog photography, lure courses, and agility lessons, which can be held at private residences, larger events, or in collaboration with other dog-focused organizations like Ma, Paws, and Me Pet Rescue.
“Randy, a puppy mill survivor, surprised us by how well he did on the treadmill. He loves treats and really took to it,” said Jen Blossom, co-founder of Ma, Paws, and Me. All dogs adopted from the rescue receive a complimentary treadmill session, encouraging their new owners to explore this unique exercise option.
While not all dogs may immediately adapt to the treadmills, Tripp notes that with a little practice, they can become comfortable. She likens the experience to learning to skate on ice, where initial awkwardness gives way to smooth movement.
Alt Dog Run stands out as one of only a few mobile dog gyms in Wisconsin. Tripp emphasizes that it complements rather than replaces a visit to a dog park, providing a fresh and engaging experience for dogs and their owners. “It offers much more than a simple 2- or 3-mile walk around the block,” she stated. “It introduces a new routine and experience.”
Sessions at Alt Dog Run range from 5 to 20 minutes with costs varying between $10 and $30, making it an accessible option for dog owners seeking to keep their pets active.
For those interested in this innovative service, Alt Dog Run can be found on Facebook, or potential clients can reach Tripp directly at 262-308-7538. This new venture not only fosters physical health for dogs but also enriches their lives through engaging activities tailored to their needs.
