As flu season approaches, health officials in coastal Georgia are urging residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The updated flu vaccine is now available, and early vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu caused approximately 30,000 deaths in the United States last year and affected over 40 million people nationwide.
Dr. Bonzo Reddick, the Health Director of the Coastal Health District, emphasizes the importance of timely vaccination. “This is the perfect time to get your flu vaccine so that you don’t catch it when flu season really starts to ramp up,” he stated. Although flu activity in Georgia is currently low, experts expect an increase as cooler weather arrives.
The flu vaccine typically takes about two weeks to become fully effective. This delay underscores the need for early vaccination, especially for high-risk groups such as older adults, children under two, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions like asthma or diabetes. It is important to note that even healthy individuals are not immune to severe complications from the flu, making widespread vaccination critical for community protection.
“Flu vaccine doesn’t necessarily stop you from catching the flu, but it does prevent you from becoming seriously ill or dying if you do catch it. It also reduces your risk of actually catching it in the first place by about half,” explained Dr. Reddick.
Flu shots are currently available at all Coastal Health District clinics across eight counties, including McIntosh, Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, and Long. These vaccinations are accessible regardless of insurance status or ability to pay, aiming to provide community-wide protection.
The flu results in over 200,000 hospitalizations each year in the U.S., with last year experiencing a spike nearing 500,000 hospitalizations. Early vaccination can cut the risk of severe illness in half, making it crucial for individuals and families to take action now.
