Fulcrum Health, a medical benefits organization based in Plymouth, is set to launch a mobile clinic aimed at addressing opioid usage through non-pharmacological treatments. The initiative, which will begin in October 2023, is designed to serve underserved communities in Anoka, Hennepin, and Ramsey counties. The project has received a significant boost from a grant of $318,000 from the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
The mobile clinic will focus on offering treatments such as acupuncture, massage, and physical therapy, particularly for individuals experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain. Patricia Dennis, CEO of Fulcrum Health, emphasized the importance of this initiative, especially in light of upcoming changes to Medicaid benefits. Starting on January 1, 2026, Minnesota plans to eliminate chiropractic benefits for Medicaid members over the age of 21, which could impact over 1 million residents.
“Physical medicine treats the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms. While pain medication is sometimes necessary, it can also mask the pain,” Dennis stated. The clinic will employ hands-on techniques, movement therapy, and personalized care to facilitate the healing process.
Enhancing Access to Alternative Treatments
The mobile clinic aims to raise awareness about alternative treatment options while providing accessible care. Patients will be able to book appointments online, allowing them to view their insurance and benefits before their visit. If long-term care is necessary, the clinic’s providers will assist in establishing connections with local healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.
“The care doesn’t end when the mobile clinic rolls away,” Dennis explained. “Patients will have a clear path to continue their treatment and stay on track.”
By targeting areas with limited access to healthcare, Fulcrum Health’s mobile clinic hopes to make a significant impact in reducing opioid dependency and promoting healthier, non-drug-based treatment options in Minnesota. The initiative signals a proactive approach to addressing a pressing public health issue while fostering community engagement and education.
