Gene “Woodpecker” Summers, a respected member of the Hampton, Virginia community, passed away on September 13, 2025, after a prolonged health battle. He was 77 years old. Known for his warm personality and devotion to family and friends, Gene left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Born on February 27, 1948, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, Gene spent over 60 years residing in the Buckroe area of Hampton. He dedicated more than 40 years to his role as a Welding Foreman at Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring in 2009. His commitment to his work and his community earned him respect and admiration from peers and residents alike.
Gene was a family man, cherished by his wife, Rita Summers, and their three sons: Ryan (Marisa), William, and Matthew (Catherine). He also leaves behind his sister, Linda Seely (David), along with his grandchildren: Laila, Thomas, Maddox, and Lucas. Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie D. Summers, his older brother, Francis Ronald Summers, and his identical twin, Dean Ray Summers, with whom he shared a remarkable bond.
In his personal life, Gene was known for his kindness and generosity. He found joy in feeding local squirrels, checking his lottery tickets, and spending quality time with loved ones. His family recalls his unwavering love and the special moments they shared.
The family will hold a visitation at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A celebration of Gene’s life will follow at 12 p.m. Interment will take place at Parklawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gene’s memory can be made to the Animal Aid Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, reflecting his compassionate spirit and love for animals and children.
