A 13-year-old Texas boy battling brain and spinal cancer was recently honored as an honorary police officer by three police departments in Metro Detroit. DJ Daniels, who has undergone multiple surgeries and treatments, was sworn in during a heartfelt ceremony at the Dearborn Heights Police Department, marking a significant milestone in his ongoing journey.
DJ’s determination to become an honorary officer with various law enforcement agencies across the United States has inspired many. Despite being given only five months to live by doctors, DJ has become an emblem of hope and resilience. “I’m never going to forget none of this,” he stated, reflecting on the special moments shared with the police departments from Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and Melvindale.
From Adversity to Advocacy
DJ’s journey has been extraordinary. He has undergone 13 brain surgeries in his young life, yet he maintains an optimistic outlook. “The craziest part is I have 13 brain surgeries and I’m 13 years old,” he remarked, highlighting his unique perspective on his challenges. His father, Theodis Daniels, cherishes every opportunity to create lasting memories with his son. “It means a great deal and a lot because I don’t know when it’s going to end,” Theodis expressed.
DJ’s mission to connect with law enforcement agencies stems from a desire to help others, inspired by the support he received during his family’s struggles. “They helped us, so I wanted to become one, and I just wanted to help more people,” he shared. As of now, DJ has achieved honorary officer status with approximately 4,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide.
In March 2024, DJ received a special honor when he was named an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service by former President Donald Trump. The emotional moment was not lost on Theodis, who emphasized the importance of recognizing DJ’s bravery beyond political affiliations. “It was about a little boy that was struggling, and he made it all the way to the White House,” Theodis said.
Making a Difference
DJ’s impact extends beyond his personal battle with cancer. He and his father have actively engaged in fundraising efforts to support those in need. Recently, they raised funds for a woman who was struggling to bury a loved one, showcasing their commitment to community service. “We met this one person who was having a hard time trying to bury her loved one, and we raised the money to help her,” DJ recounted.
In collaboration with country music artist Jason Aldean, they helped raise $200,000 for charity, demonstrating the power of community and generosity. “We didn’t keep $1.00 of it. We didn’t want none of that money,” Theodis stated, emphasizing their selflessness.
Even as DJ faces new challenges, including the emergence of three new tumors earlier this year, he offers words of encouragement to others in similar situations. “Keep your head up, believe in God, stay safe, have faith,” he advised.
Reflecting on his life, DJ values his family immensely. “I’m grateful for my dad and my two brothers and my mom and my grandma,” he said, highlighting the importance of support during difficult times.
For those interested in supporting DJ and his family, donations can be made through designated channels. DJ’s journey continues to inspire many, proving that hope and resilience can shine brightly, even in the darkest times.
