The Valdosta Symphony Orchestra (VSO) will open its season this weekend with a performance of Antonin Dvorak’s celebrated Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, commonly known as “From the New World.” The concert will take place on September 27, 2023, at 7 p.m. in the Whitehead Auditorium at Valdosta State University.
Dvorak composed this symphony during his tenure at the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, where he lived from 1892 to 1895. It reflects his exploration of American musical themes, drawing inspiration from Indigenous music, folk tunes, and spirituals. Notably, music critic Ted Libbey remarked that while Dvorak sought to capture American sounds, the piece also resonates with echoes of his Bohemian roots, serving ultimately as a nostalgic reflection on home.
A Celebration of American Heritage
The VSO’s performance of “From the New World” marks the beginning of a broader celebration leading to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Howard Hsu, the VSO’s music director and conductor, noted Dvorak’s likely homesickness during his time in America, which influenced the composition’s emotional depth. Hsu shared that Dvorak often spent his leisure time observing trains, ocean liners, and feeding pigeons in the bustling city.
One of the most poignant moments in the symphony is the spiritual “Goin’ Home,” which evolved from a poignant English horn solo in the second movement. This adaptation showcases Dvorak’s ability to infuse his work with profound emotional resonance.
Highlighting Contemporary Works
In addition to Dvorak’s masterpiece, the concert will feature Jessie Montgomery‘s “Soul Force” and Liebermann’s Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 39. The latter will highlight the virtuosity of Sarah Jane Young, a principal flutist for the VSO and an assistant professor of flute at Valdosta State University. Young has an impressive background, having performed internationally in countries such as Jordan, Canada, and various locations across the United States.
Young’s experience includes serving as principal flute with the Amman Symphony Orchestra and performing for notable figures, including Queen Noor and Princess Muna al-Hussein of Jordan. Her contributions to the concert promise to be a significant highlight, showcasing her talent in a piece that has long been celebrated for its technical demands.
The concert will commence with a pre-concert chat at 6:15 p.m., providing attendees an opportunity to engage more deeply with the music and its context. Reservations are required for the performance, which will take place at the Fine Arts Building located at the corner of Oak and Brookwood streets.
