Michael Waldron, the head writer of the Marvel series Loki, has hinted that fans may one day see an alternate ending for the show’s first season. During a recent Reddit AMA, he remarked, “Never say never, especially in the MCU,” when asked about the originally planned conclusion before the show was renewed for a second season.
Originally intended as a limited series on Disney Plus, Loki, featuring Tom Hiddleston as the titular character, concluded its first season with a tantalizing post-credits scene that paved the way for a continuation. Waldron, who wrote much of the first season with the mindset that it would be a standalone story, reflected on the multitude of potential endings he had conceived. “There were a million different endings,” he explained in 2022. “But there was the original one season ending, which I guess is just for me.”
The actual finale of Loki season 1 showcased a dramatic clash between Sylvie and He Who Remains at the End of Time. This confrontation ended with Sylvie eliminating He Who Remains, resulting in the unleashing of a chaotic multiverse, setting the stage for future storylines.
Upcoming Projects and Future Plans
As Waldron shifts his focus to the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, he continues to play a significant role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Co-written with Stephen McFeely, known for his work on Captain America and the Avengers series, Avengers: Doomsday is set to feature a star-studded cast including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, and Pedro Pascal. Directed by the Russo brothers, the film is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
