Jennifer Lawrence recently premiered her new film, Die My Love, at the 20th Rome Film Festival, where she humorously reflected on her past audition for the Twilight franchise. In a candid interview with Variety, Lawrence disclosed that she initially auditioned for the role of Bella Swan, a part ultimately secured by Kristen Stewart. She jokingly referred to her collaboration with Robert Pattinson in Die My Love as “the total revenge that I’ve wanted.”
Directed by Lynne Ramsay, Die My Love is a psychological dramedy that explores the intense relationship between Lawrence’s character, Grace, and Pattinson’s Jackson. The film delves into themes of shared psychosis triggered by Grace’s struggle with postpartum depression. It made its debut earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and marks Ramsay’s follow-up to her acclaimed work, You Were Never Really Here.
For Lawrence, this film represents a return to the screen following roles in No Hard Feelings and Causeway. In contrast, Pattinson is coming off the underwhelming box office performance of Mickey 17 earlier this spring.
In a previous discussion on The Rewatchables podcast, Lawrence recounted her Twilight audition experience. “They turned me down immediately. I didn’t even get a callback,” she shared. Ironically, this setback led to her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, which significantly boosted her career.
Both actors have since carved out successful paths in the film industry, balancing blockbuster roles with smaller, independent projects. Lawrence portrayed Mystique in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, while Pattinson took on the title role in The Batman.
Positive Reception for Die My Love
Critics have responded positively to Die My Love. The film currently holds an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers highlighting Lawrence’s performance as a standout feature. Graeme Guttmann, in his review for ScreenRant, awarded the film an 8 out of 10, praising Lawrence’s “earth-shattering” portrayal and the unique tonal balance of the narrative.
Guttmann noted, “Grace is the beating heart of this film, with Lawrence’s flashes of anger and violence balanced by the star’s subtle comedic timing in key scenes.” He described the humor as complex, emphasizing that while the film contains moments that evoke irony, it remains largely uncomfortable.
As anticipation builds for the film’s North American theatrical release on November 7, 2025, it remains to be seen how general audiences will receive it. Nonetheless, early critical feedback suggests that this collaboration between Lawrence and Pattinson, coming nearly 17 years after their missed opportunity with Twilight, has been well worth the wait.
With an intriguing premise and a strong cast, Die My Love is set to be another compelling chapter in both actors’ careers.
