Acclaimed pianist and composer Isaiah J. Thompson leads the Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet in a festive celebration of Vince Guaraldi‘s music during “A Guaraldi Holiday” at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on December 22, 2024. The event, presented in collaboration with Vail Jazz, features two performances at 18:00 and 20:30, showcasing the quartet’s interpretations of Guaraldi’s beloved compositions, notably those featured in the classic “Peanuts” television specials.
Thompson, who first gained attention at the 2014 Vail Jazz Workshop, returns to Vail as a prominent figure in contemporary jazz. His journey from workshop participant to leader in the genre reflects his growth in musicianship, creativity, and confidence. Anneliese Swift, executive director of Vail Jazz, emphasized Thompson’s role in inspiring the community, stating, “He embodies exactly what the Vail Jazz Workshop is about: nurturing young artists.”
The quartet, consisting of tenor saxophonist Julian Lee, drummer Matthew Lee, and upright bassist Sebastian Rios, promises to deliver a fresh yet nostalgic experience. Their performance aims to evoke the holiday spirit through Guaraldi’s jazz, reimagining classics with a blend of joy and sophisticated improvisation.
Thompson’s passion for Guaraldi’s music runs deep. He noted that many people who claim not to enjoy jazz often connect with Guaraldi’s work through the “Peanuts” specials. “A lot of our introduction to jazz was ‘Peanuts’,” he explained, underscoring how the music sparked curiosity about the genre. His recent album, “A Guaraldi Holiday,” pays homage to Guaraldi and features a full band, offering a vibrant interpretation of these cherished tunes.
The musician highlighted the accessibility of Guaraldi’s compositions, which have introduced jazz to audiences of all ages. “He’s the Trojan horse for jazz,” Thompson remarked, explaining that Guaraldi’s music made the genre approachable for families. He emphasized the importance of the original context of the music, where the interplay between the characters and the score enhances the overall experience.
Thompson is excited to perform alongside his childhood friends and fellow musicians, stating, “We’ve been having a great time playing together.” He emphasized the ensemble’s commitment to modern jazz, which thrives on improvisation and active participation. “Understanding where we’re coming from and really listening to each other is super important,” he noted, describing the quartet’s dynamic approach to performance.
During the concerts, the quartet will honor the spirit of Guaraldi’s work, even as some arrangements vary from the originals. Thompson expressed his hope that the audience would deeply engage with the music and feel the essence of the holiday season.
Reflecting on the significance of jazz in Vail, Thompson acknowledged that while the genre deserves broader appreciation, the community’s commitment to music is palpable. “When you’re in an environment like Vail, you feel the music is treasured,” he said.
For those interested in attending, tickets for “A Guaraldi Holiday” are priced at $84.75 for general admission (sold out) and $133 for reserved seating (also sold out). This event is part of the Pick 3/5 Ticket Package, which allows patrons to enjoy multiple performances.
As the holiday season approaches, Thompson and his quartet invite audiences to celebrate jazz and the enduring legacy of Vince Guaraldi through an evening filled with music, nostalgia, and holiday cheer.
