Four decades ago, the short-lived television series Police Squad! made a significant impact on comedy, despite its brief run. Following the success of the 1980 parody film Airplane!, which grossed approximately $78 million at the box office (equivalent to $214 million today), co-directors David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker sought to create a similar spoof centered around police officers. Their inspiration stemmed from the 1950s drama series M Squad, featuring Lee Marvin.
At the time, then-Paramount executive Michael Eisner, who had supported Airplane!, offered the trio six episodes on ABC, assuring them that network interference would be minimal. The series starred Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling officer Frank Drebin, a role that marked a notable shift for the actor, who was primarily known for dramatic performances before his comedic breakout in Airplane!. “Leslie never let on that he was in a comedy,” Zucker remarked, highlighting Nielsen’s exceptional talent for deadpan humor.
Critically Acclaimed but Short-Lived
Each episode of Police Squad! began with the murder of a notable guest star, followed by Drebin’s attempts to solve the case. Among the well-known guests were William Shatner and Florence Henderson. Notably, comedian John Belushi filmed a death scene, but his appearance was ultimately shelved following his untimely passing just a day after the pilot aired.
The series debuted on March 4, 1982, and received positive reviews from critics, with The Hollywood Reporter praising it for “hitting the bullseye with uncanny accuracy.” Despite the acclaim, the show struggled to attract viewers and was cancelled after only four episodes.
From Cancellation to Cult Classic
Although Police Squad! faced an early cancellation, its legacy endured. Nielsen’s character returned in the 1988 film The Naked Gun, directed by David Zucker. The film was a box office triumph, spawning two sequels and solidifying the comedic formula established by the series. Zucker expressed pride in the show’s revival, stating, “It has really gained a following,” despite feeling sidelined from the recent reboot.
The latest project, a reboot of The Naked Gun, is set to hit theaters on August 1, 2023, with actor Liam Neeson portraying Drebin’s son. While Zucker is not involved in this new iteration, he acknowledges the lasting influence of the original series, which continues to resonate with audiences today.
This retrospective on Police Squad! highlights the series’ importance in shaping modern comedy, paving the way for future parodies and a cult following that remains strong decades after its initial release.
