Chris Stapleton achieved a significant milestone when his rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey” was certified double Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 12, 2024. This recognition marks the first time a country song has reached this prestigious level, with over 20 million units sold in the United States.
RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier commented on the achievement, stating, “Chris Stapleton’s undeniable vocal grit and storytelling have connected deeply — driving chart successes, earning major awards, and most importantly, resonating with fans. RIAA is proud to celebrate him alongside MCA as ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ today makes history, becoming the first country single ever to earn a Double Diamond certification with two million units in the U.S. alone. It’s a remarkable achievement and another defining moment in Stapleton’s career.”
Chart Success and CMA Awards Recognition
“Tennessee Whiskey,” originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, debuted on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 in November 2015, where it peaked at No. 20. This debut followed Stapleton’s breakout performance at the 49th annual CMA Awards, where he collaborated with pop star Justin Timberlake for a medley that included both “Tennessee Whiskey” and Timberlake’s “Drink You Away.” That night, Stapleton was honored with several CMA Awards, including Album of the Year for Traveller, New Artist of the Year, and Male Vocalist of the Year.
To date, Stapleton has achieved three No. 1 hits on the Hot Country Songs chart and has seen five projects reach the top position on Billboard’s top country albums chart. His unique blend of traditional country and soulful performance has garnered a wide audience and critical acclaim.
Upcoming Performances
Stapleton is set to continue his All-American Road Show throughout the fall, with performances scheduled at several iconic venues. Fans can look forward to shows at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Boston’s Fenway Park, Detroit’s Ford Field, and Toronto’s Rogers Stadium. His ability to captivate audiences with his powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics promises to make these performances memorable.
With “Tennessee Whiskey” now standing as a historic achievement in country music, Stapleton’s influence within the genre continues to grow, solidifying his status as one of the leading voices of his generation.
