Adam Sandler has declared his intention to produce “at least 50 more movies” as he humorously reflected on aging during his acceptance speech at the AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards. The event took place on February 17, 2024, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, where Sandler received the prestigious career achievement honor.
In a lighthearted address that showcased his comedic talents, Sandler greeted the audience jokingly as “silver-haired daddies” and “salt-and-pepper mommies.” He acknowledged the implications of receiving an AARP award, quipping, “It’s not because of this award. I got 10 other reasons that let you know why.” One such reason he humorously cited was needing to take a Viagra just to relieve himself.
Sandler continued with his signature humor, noting that he has only one tastebud left, declaring that everything he eats now tastes like oatmeal. He also poked fun at his texting habits, saying that the font size is so large it can be read by “anyone with a window seat on a Delta flight.” The audience erupted in laughter as he recounted how he struggled to stay awake while watching Academy Award screeners, managing only eight minutes of combined viewing time.
“Thank you to my lovely wife for staying with me even though no part of my body is where it used to be,” Sandler said, expressing gratitude to his family for their unwavering support. He thanked his children for not laughing at him every time he walked down the hallway shirtless.
Sandler’s speech concluded with a promise to the audience: “I will make at least 50 more movies before I am dead. And at least 25 of them will be good.” His longtime friend and fellow actor, Henry Winkler, introduced him at the ceremony, emphasizing Sandler’s ability to balance comedy with sincere dramatic performances. Winkler noted Sandler’s impressive work in films like “Uncut Gems” and “Jay Kelly,” while humorously observing that Sandler remains committed to his trademark Hawaiian shirts and sports shorts.
AARP CEO Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan praised Sandler for challenging aging stereotypes within Hollywood. “People know him, people appreciate him. We laugh with him. We cry with him,” she stated, highlighting the significant impact of his expansive career on audiences.
In “Jay Kelly,” Sandler plays Ron Sukenick, the agent and closest friend of the character Jay Kelly, portrayed by George Clooney. Sandler has garnered nominations for best supporting actor at the 2026 Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards for this role. Previously, he received a Critics Choice nomination for best actor in “Uncut Gems,” released in 2019.
The night’s awards also honored Laura Dern, who won best actress for her role in “Is This Thing On?” and Regina Hall, who received best supporting actress for “One Battle After Another.” Delroy Lindo took home the best supporting actor award for his performance in “Sinners.”
AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards has celebrated talent in film and television aimed at audiences aged 50 and older for more than two decades, working to combat ageism while recognizing the contributions of older actors and filmmakers. The ceremony was hosted by Alan Cumming, a Tony- and Emmy Award-winning actor known for his role in “The Traitors.” The full awards ceremony is set to premiere on PBS’s “Great Performances” on February 22, 2024.
